No disrespect intended but I do not agree with that. If it is a clear case of self-defense, a man comes home and see's someone raping his wife and attacking her with a knife or gun and he shoots that intruder, and the officers and DA agree the evidence all points to self-defense does that really need to go to trial?

No. But there should always be an investigation. Even in the circumstances you describe, to make sure that man didn't come home and find someone else consensually fucking his wife, killed him, and the wife is covering for him. In this case there was no investigation to speak of. I am glad we had one now. If he is acquitted eventually, well, then a jury will have found him innocent. But the system needs to work.
