I consider someone who uses the nickname of the traitorous South as their moniker to be a failure.

This is the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was not the flag of the Confederate States of America. It was intended to identify the Army in battle. The fact that it was chosen by a bunch of mouth breathing, knuckle dragging Kluckers as a symbol of their group dedicated to hatred no more makes the flag a symbol of hate than does the fact that they burn crosses at their rallies and on peoples lawns, make the cross a symbol of hate.

Mostly those in Northern VA were torn, I'm sorry that some today carry the banner in defiance of the US and what it stands for. For the most part I believe those flying that flag today are very angry at the Federal Government of the US. I don't know that it insinuates racism per se, but can see how it would be interpreted as such.

the swastika was originally a symbol of light which is why the nazis adopted it

symbols evolve and sometimes move from good to evil through their usage

while most of the confederates fought honorably, the cause that they fought for (slavery and states rights) was less than honorable

the south's heritage from the civil was was sorrow and destruction

how the fuck is 'states rights' ( a misnomer in itself) less than honorable?

And who gets to decide on how strong that "association/taint" is?

when you come down to it, it must be an individual

however, if enough individuals think a particular symbol has become evil, then it tends to become evil in the general parlance - it is very subjective, as are most symbols

i think that the average us citizen thinks that a swastika represents the evil of the nazis or a confederate flag, the evil of slavery and the rebellion of the south to defend slavery

also, i think that the average white southerner thinks of the confederate flag as representing an honorable rebellion against repression

And what of those that FEEL the cross is a symbol of subjugation, or the Star of David is a sign of oppression, or that the Maltese Cross is to close to the Iron Cross, or anything else for that matter.
Because it seems that you're suggesting that when ANY group FEELS that a symbol is a sign of negativity that EVERYONE is stop using it, in deference to that group.
Should people petition that flags be banned; BECAUSE of what a particular grouip might FEEL?

economics and the assault on them by the north.

In response to the election of an anti-slavery Republican as President, 11 southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy"); the other 25 states supported the federal government ("the Union"). After four years of warfare, mostly within the Southern states, the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was outlawed...
