Thieves

Across the United States more than 2,700 companies are collecting state income taxes from hundreds of thousands of workers – and are keeping the money with the states’ approval, says an eye-opening report published on Thursday.

The report from Good Jobs First, a nonprofit taxpayer watchdog organization funded by Ford, Surdna and other major foundations, identifies 16 states that let companies divert some or all of the state income taxes deducted from workers’ paychecks. None of the states requires notifying the workers, whose withholdings are treated as taxes they paid.

General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Procter & Gamble, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and AMC Theatres enjoy deals to keep state taxes deducted from their workers’ paychecks, the report shows. Foreign companies also enjoy such arrangements, including Electrolux, Nissan, Toyota and a host of Canadian, Japanese and European banks, Good Jobs First says.

Why do state governments do this? Public records show that large companies often pay little or no state income tax in states where they have large operations, as this column has documented. Some companies get discounts on property, sales and other taxes. So how to provide even more subsidies without writing a check? Simple. Let corporations keep the state income taxes deducted from their workers’ paychecks for up to 25 years.

????.....obvious thread fail.....the employees are receiving credit for the taxes they pay the state......the state is using the money which is now theirs to pay an obligation it owes under the law....nothing is being stolen, thus there are no thieves....

yes....that's why I knew it was a fail......did you think there were some employees in some state somewhere who weren't getting their state tax refund because a corporation had stolen it?......that might explain why you're stupid enough to vote for liberals.......you can't think.....

No, where did you get that idea?

Just curious... but what is the difference of them keeping the money vs. the states collecting the money and then issuing a subsidy in another form?

Nothing. That is the entire point of the article, this is another form (hidden) of corporate socialism. Thanks for clarifying it.

If I was working for one of those companies I would want my State Tax dollars refunded to me. I can do more to improve the economy by spending that money.

Well, you are right to point out that in both cases, it's corporate welfare. The difference is disclosure.

These companies are already getting all of those tax breaks and subsidies. But they wanted more. So they are getting their employees' state tax deductions. And no one really knows about this. Part of the benefit of having a large employer in the state is those state taxes which go to keep up the infrastructure that the companies depend upon to do business. That benefit if now taken away, and no one really knows about it.

People should know that they are paying their taxes to their employer, their employer is actually taxing them to work there. People should know that the state tax dollars they are paying is not going to their state and therefore not benefiting them via state services.

It's going to their employers.

Funny... because that is the very same thing Republicans say about taxation in general. The individual is indeed going to be the most effective at putting his/her money to work.

Employers who in turn give out money and benefits to their employees. Who in turn spend the money. Which in turn tends to get hit with sales taxes (in most states).

Their employer is not taxing them. The State is. The State is in turn giving money to the corporations as an incentive to keep the jobs in state vs. potentially relocating to another state/country.

Most people don't know the details on any corporate subsidy. This one is no different.

I am a proponent for ending taxation on corporations as whole because they are highly regressive taxation. This can only be done, however, if capital gains are taxed at the same rate as other income sources.

you see, this underscores my point....there are liberals out there stupid enough to believe that an employee of one of these companies isn't going to get his state tax refund.....articles like the OP play on the fears of people as ignorant as Mott......

This is amazing. Large corporations being allowed to keep their employee's state tax payments, without the employees even being informed, and SF has no problem with this.

What's the big deallllll? Nothing to see here! Move along!

Meanwhile in another thread he is waxing poetic about how single mothers on welfare have no dignity because they aren't working. LOL

Hilarious.

Well, this is what you get when you vote Republican folks. Is it working for you? Nope, but it's working for Exxon Mobile.

Darla....I would like an honest answer please.....do you seriously think any employee didn't get her state tax refund this year?......
