The opening paragraph says this, "They're rich. They're angry. And they want to pony up more money to Uncle Sam."

I stayed out of the Lead By Example thread but this one got me. Sure this group can protest to the government to raise their taxes. But if these rich people really have money burning a hole in their pocket and they really feel the government doesn't get enough of their money there is no reason that the individuals of this group can't personally pay more on tax day to Uncle Sam as well as rallying other like minded rich people around the country to do the same to make a statement. And a large number of rich people from all over the country who voluntarily give more of their money to the government would make a big statement to not only lawmakers but all other Americans. The press would be all over a story like that with positive coverage and lord knows politicians love to join a popular cause. That to me is how these guys who effect government change.

Dude, this is a great place to meet men or women. I can't even believe you got any further than that thought. Who cares?

Ha! You don't think I didn't think about that all ready? This rally was a bunch of men. There was nothing there for me!

Do you believe that a leader who set the example might motivate many of these people to do the same?

Really a bunch of wealthy, obviously liberal men huh? Thanks for f'ing telling me about it beforehand Cawacko! Beforehand being the key qualifier! Wait till the next Supermodels who like to be spanked convention happens in NY. No PM's about it from me this time!

Think it through. These wealthy men want to give their money to the government, not spend it on their date. ;)

LOL! I know John Stewart the guy who is pictured talking. To make it up to you I will call him and ask if there is another rally planned to give you time to prepare. :)

So in other words it is not important to you that people be socially and civily responsible? That being responsible about civic obligations is an object of ridicule to you? Pretty short sighted thinking isn't it?

Did I ridicule them? I offered a suggestion which I thought would be more effective in helping them achieve their goals. What do you dislike or disagree with about my idea? Why do you think it wouldn't work?

They're protesting for policy change. Realistically, anyone they could influence to voluntarily pay more in taxes probably wouldn't amount to much.

It's a mistake to change the narrative on this to "if they want to pay more, they should." If I think cars don't have high enough emissions standards in general, so I buy one that does and influence a few of my friends - or even many of my friends - to do the same, it won't amount to anything w/out policy change.

Well stated Onceler.

I understand they want policy change. I'm not arguing the amount of money they would raise to give the government would cut the deficit in half or anything like that. I am suggesting that if you take some high profile people (if you can call rich '5 percenters' that) who want policy change but are also making a statement (there would have to be rallies like this in major cities across the country) by paying more taxes that the positive attention it would receive from the press could build momentum for real change.

Of course my suggestion could be a complete failure too but to me it is an example of putting actions into words where it could create the change they want.

He and other liberals dislike you suggesting that they lead by example. You see, it is only going to work if they are first forced to do it by the government.

This assumes that the people that want to cut taxes for rich people (or keep them low), Republicans in Congress, give a shit what a bunch of rich liberals think. They don't.

They just don't understand that the action of paying extra voluntarily is meant to induce the policy change. It is not meant to solve the revenue problem by itself. I honestly don't think liberals understand the concept of leadership or the simple idea of taking things one step at a time. They want to leap to the end from step one. Any steps in between are just silly to them.

I just don't think you're realistic. If a handful of millionaires pays more, it's MAYBE a small news story for a single cycle. And not much would happen after that.

What world do you live in where policymakers everywhere would see that and say, "hey, wait a minute!"

Hasn't the "lead by example" horse been beaten to death and had a stick of dynamite shoved up its ass and exploded into a million pieces already?

That's likely because your influence isn't as far reaching as the President.

And what is right, if you truly believe it, is what you should do even if it "won't amount to much". If you truly believe it to be the moral action, then it is the action you should take.

Especially when it is in support of something like the Buffet rule which itself will not amount to much even if passed as policy.

Do you understand how movements begin? Do you have any comprehension of the number of times we have had to hear about 'we should be paying more/I am ok with paying more' from wealthy liberals? Why is it that you feel that the only way they can get this passed is to force everyone to do it at once? Why is it that you cannot understand the simple concept of 'see, we are doing it, we believe in what we are saying should be done enough to do it voluntarily'? Why is it that you cannot see that it adds power to their message?

They are not meant to simply pay more and then stop. If they believe in something and want to affect a policy change then they continue on, recruiting more wealthy people to do the same.

Apparently not. Can't help but notice you ran right up and started commenting on the topic. Also can't help but notice you still don't get it. So no, it most certainly has not been beaten to death.
