A Congressional Gold Medal for NYC Subway Hero Daniel Penny? Make It So!

Daniel Penny is a hero... And was unfairly charged.... There can't be anyone who disagrees with what he did... Had their family members been in that car that day... Not a single person here has ever been able to suggest what he might have done differently.... He did what he had to do that day to protect many others... Put the real blame where blame is due....

Remember Bernie Goetz back in '84?

Either way what Penny did can be viewed somewhat differently. The guy that Penny subdued apparently was mentally ill and while very scary and threatening had not yet attacked anyone. I don't expect Penny to be able to do a field mental health eval and approach it from that way, but really what Penny did was kill a very sick individual for being openly and flagrantly ill. LOOK, I DON'T SAY NEELY WASN'T A DANGER. He very well may have become so. And maybe it's a bit unfair to suggest that what was probably a split-second decision by Penny should have been more carefully considered, but rather that a man who was a trained MARINE and probably knew quite a bit about choking someone to death from training, should have been able to subdue this "potential threat" without killing him dead all the way.

Penny is not a hero. He took an action that may OR MAY NOT have helped anyone or saved anyone, but DEFINITELY did end up with the death of a very ill individual for merely looking and sounding threatening.

Do you lock your doors at night?

Sometimes, when we remember. Our closest neighbors lost their key years ago and never lock theirs. Why? What does that have to do with some pumped-up vigilante killing a rowdy mentally ill man on the subway? Should *everyone* who's rowdy and scary in public be executed by a civilian? Why aren't cops killing these ppl right and left if they are a threat to public safety? Can you link us up with news reports of mentally ill homeless ppl killing others on the subway? Why not?

The threat to innocent life was stopped. People like you never get it.

You're right. I do not get why anyone who kills unnecessarily should be considered a hero. Cops stop threats all the time w/o killing the alleged perp. If they do, it is investigated. Because in a civilized world, we expect them to act responsibly with the power we give them, just as we expect citizens to do the same and not kill without reason.

You killer apologists think you live in the 1800s wild west, or wish you did. Try to evolve. It's good to be smarter, you'll like it.

You're stupid. Only a stupid person cares about the life of the threat over innocent people.

A chokehold, if done right, will render a person unconscious.

Most police depts. forbid their use because of the high risk of death. This guy was trained in hand-to-hand combat, by and for the military. The situation was not one where he needed to resort to that. I would have an entirely different opinion if the dead man had been armed, even if only with a knife, and was flourishing it. Yes, he might have punched someone. That hardly deserves the death penalty.

The jury had all the evidence. How long are you going to beat that dead horse?
