This varies greatly. It could be as quick as the very same day (for in-person services) or it could take multiple weeks (for mail services). Personally, I would obtain one well in advance of when I would need it, but it doesn't take anywhere near 229 days to obtain one.
This varies by state, but in Wisconsin, it costs $20 for the first copy (+$3 for any additional copies ordered at the same time) plus fees for any additional services provided (such as expedited service).
Passport book = $165 total fees
Passport card = $65 total fees
Passport book + card combo = $195 total fees
Additional service fees may also apply.
It could take a month or two (or possibly longer) to obtain a passport... nowhere near 229 days.

The turn around time to obtain a birth certificate copy once you fill out the form and mail it can take up to 2 months or a little bit over. The same goes for a passport. The MAGA GOP was hoping for immediate passage of the bill into law. That means A WHOLE LOTTA PEOPLE WOULD LITERALLY HAVE TO RE-REGISTER, which takes about another month on top of everything else. And remember, your Orange Oaf courtesy of the Apartheid Punk and DOGE have truly screwed over effective personal in the very federal agencies that process these items. Can you say DELAY boys and girls?
And the SAA virtually eliminates mail-in voting. That means a lot to rural folk, college kids and senior citizens. Also, many senior folk are on a fixed income, so dropping the passport money may cause (unnecessary) dire straits for them.
And before you parrot the same old stupid MAGA line: Even the Heritage Foundation conceded that there is NO RAMPANT OR EFFECTIVE VOTER FRAUD IN OUR ELECTIONS. So while phasing in a voter ID system THAT WILL BENEFIT AND NOT DISENFRANCHISE (which a portion of democrats support), it does NOT mean that you completely stop the current voting system which put your Cheeto Jeezus twice into office. Capice?

I'm "rural folk". I drive down the road a few miles to my town hall and I vote there in person. It's super easy. I usually do so first thing in the morning before driving into work.
How many senior folk are "just getting a passport now at 80 years old"? You're being stupid (still). I also highly doubt that less that a couple hundred dollars is going to "break the bank" for them.
