Emergency services responded to reports of gunshots fired at Campbell Parade at around 6:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, Dec. 14, the New South Wales (NSW Police) said in a news release.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that at least 12 people were killed in the incident and 29 others were hospitalized, per the BBC. Lanyon added that a "significant investigation" will be led by counter-terrorism.
A man believed to be one of the shooters was killed in the shooting, while a second alleged gunman remains in a critical condition, according to the NSW Police.
Children and a police officer are allegedly among the victims, per News.com.au. The incident occurred as the Jewish community gathered for the beach festival, Chanukah by the Sea, attended by many children and families.
