16 GOP lawmakers have decided to throw in the towel on their Capitol Hill careers

No way, you really think so?

I think 2012...he'd be slaughtered in 08.

I know what you are going to say about the base, but not even the base wants to nominate someone who could go down with 12 electoral votes in the general. I don't know. That'd be really shocking.

Good point. You're probably right.

I think its a long shot too. Its just that I can't remember seeing a weaker GOP field, and was wondering if they'd get desparate enough to nominate someone besides these clowns.

Yeah, since Thompson cratered and just did not live up to those expectations (which took me by surprise, I will admit), I don't know what they're going to do.

I'm afraid Rudy might get it. And that means I owe my brother 500 bucks you know, which I was planning on collecting from him and buying some outrageously expensive boots with.

Oh, and plus...then he could win and we would have a facist country.

Another one down, HASTERT is OUT!

Yeah, here is the story now:

Sources: Hastert to resign Congress
Illinois Republican to vacate seat, ending 21-year career, sources say
The Associated Press
Updated: 11:00 a.m. ET Oct 18, 2007
WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert will resign soon rather than complete his term 15 months from now, ending a 21-year career in Congress, Republican aides Thursday.

The Illinois Republican had announced in August he would not seek re-election in 2008, but said he planned to finish his current term, which ends in January 2009. Republican aides, speaking on background only because Hastert had not yet publicly announced his new plans, said he now intends to leave office late this year or early next year.

Hastert’s resignation would trigger a special election, probably in early 2008, in his Chicago-area district that includes Aurora and Elgin. Republicans hope to hold the seat ahead of the November 2008 election, which some fear will draw large numbers of Democratic voters unhappy with President Bush and the Iraq war.

Why did he change his mind about finishing his current term?

Must be another desperate need to spend more time with family.

Interesting. I have heard nothing in the pipeline. I wonder if there is something with his health...

Isn't he rumored to be involved in some of the Cunningham related scandals ?
I'm not sure. Nothing I have heard would cause him to resign early before his last term. It may be a ploy by the State GOP to have it decided by Special Election because the General would be a more difficult fight.... :dunno:

My pipeline pretty much only holds information that is either huge, or in-state.
