In 1963 Americans saw the notion of free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war, as something that represents defeat.

One of the biggest goals accomplished by communists since 1963 is getting control of the schools to use as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. They wanted to soften the curriculum and to get control of teachers’ associations. They wanted to put the party line in textbooks. Speaking of Church, the communists wanted to eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.” Obviously, Americans of 1963 would have seen accomplishment of this goal as America's defeat.
One of the no brainer communist goals to take over America was to discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis. Lefties are all over this today, but Americans in 1963 would have seen this as losing a war to the communists.

I am talking about things like how Communists wanted to support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc. The communist takeover of the United States that Americans in 1963 feared, and the takeover that has occurred.
Americans in 1963 would view your comment here as evidence that Communists had successfully taken over the United States.
