$1,000-a-night hospitality suites topped $400,000.

(CBS) Thanks to recently filed Congressional expense reports there's new light shed on the Copenhagen Climate Summit in Denmark and how much it cost taxpayers.

CBS News Investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports official filings and our own investigation show at least 106 people from the House and Senate attended - spouses, a doctor, a protocol expert and even a photographer.

For 15 Democratic and 6 Republican Congressmen, food and rooms for two nights cost $4,406 tax dollars each. That's $2,200 a day - more than most Americans spend on their monthly mortgage payment.

CBS News asked members of Congress and staff about whether they're mindful that it's public tax dollars they're spending. Many said they had never even seen the bills or the expense reports.

Copenhagen Congressional Junket

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., is a key climate change player. He went to Copenhagen last year. Last week, we asked him about the $2,200-a-day bill for room and food.

"I can't believe that," Rep. Waxman said. "I can't believe it, but I don't know."

But his name is in black and white in the expense reports. The group expense report was filed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. She wouldn't talk about it when our producer tried to ask.

Pelosi's office did offer an explanation for the high room charges. Those who stayed just two nights were charged a six-night minimum at the five-star Marriott. One staffer said, they strongly objected to no avail. You may ask how they'll negotiate a climate treaty, if they can't get a better deal on hotel rooms.

I guess what we'll hear is, "Bush did it too"

even a rinky-dink professional organization get's 25% off with group rates. She's obviously lying. The money probably got laundered to some campaign fund.

You must not travel very much, or have any big-ticket events where you live.

How is this any different from any hotel in any city in the world raising rates when a big event is planned? It's capitalism at its best, you should be applauding it. It's the same as hotels upping the rates for the Superbowl, the Kentucky Derby, the Olympics, etc.

You may not like it because of the climate aspect but it's still a common practice.

This is why I am staring to come to the conclusion that I dont want to pay the govt a single cent. The corruption and waste is sickening. We are livin gin a modified serfdom now.

Imagine a "geen event" where all the chicken little's fly in on there gigantic carbon footprint jets and spend multiple millions of dollars in a reccession! What was wrong with teleconferencing? Or a small delegation and no spouses? Or how about we all acknowedge that congress is out of touch, out of step, and out of line!

For that answer look at their true agenda: to acquire and hold power. Conferences like this are the rewards of having that power.

Hence the serfdom comment. Im going to pay what i have to bare minimum for now.. then when my fixed bill are paid off im going to stop working so I dont have to pay shit.
In suburban Boston you'll pay hefty real estate taxes on inflated assessments. Ca-ching!

Do they still tax your furniture?

What a load of shit.

Im so sick of you people acting like this petty ass shit means anything.

Your people took high priced vacations as gifts and you defended it.

This was something the A,merican people care alot about. If you really think people like this can stay just anywhere and have the needed security provided then you are comepletely had your heads arse injected.

Its not fair they have better life then us. We work just as hard. They should be forced to share the wealth. Sound familiar? I propose that all member's of congress have an AMT of 25%. I think i read something like 90% of them pay less then 5%.

4200 a year realestate taxes. I do all big purchases in New Hampshire or online.
That's not as bad as NY, but your income tax is 12% instead of their 7 or 8.

Do the still tax your furniture? My grandparents used to challenge that then we'd go over and borrow it for a while.

State Income tax is 5%. Sales tax just went form 5% to 6.25% under the dems here.. top reason we voted brown to send a message. They were floating new taxes daily in the Boston globe up till Kennedy died. Needed to hand them a wakeupcall.

You can always count on Desh and the "your people did it to defense". Notice the article said 15 Democrats and 6 Republicans? So it's not like this was only Democrats who did it. Republicans were involved too. Doesn't make it right.
