$76.00 PER HOUR

Do you have any idea how much at-home work teachers put in? There's lesson preparation, theres research, then there is grading work, then there are the kids who stay after school for help, THEN there is qualification study/testing. There are after school meetings with kid's parents, there are after school faculty meetings on policy and agenda, etc. If you really want to be a good teacher, you are working AT LEAST ten hours a day...

ANd for anyone who thinks teachers make god money for what they do then by all funking means, go out and teach junior high for one year and then let's see what you have to say.

Seriously, there are ver FEW jobs that are more important in our society.

Well, well....at least you have the balls to give an answer in your own round about way.....thanks, though you're sadly somewhat brainwashed.....

Bullshit

I can teach my own kids. I can't cut out my own gall bladder

I didn't get reimbursed for supplies at work either.....that would be tools needed to do the work to you pinheads....

With $75 an hour, whats the problem......even at $25 an hour, whats the problem ? They be buyin' the kids laptops.....not....more like ball point pens.....

Ain't Obama giving enough money to the states to supply the basics or does it all go for teachers and administrators salarys ?

First of all they don't get $75/hour. The argument is whether they deserve $76K a year.

And re: your comment about buying supplies and not getting reimbursed... I suppose you've forgotten how some of our troops in Iraq were forced to spend their own money on protective gear. WTH was wrong with the bush administration?

Some U.S. Soldiers Forced to Buy Own Gear

You can just shut your pie hole about teachers buying classroom teaching aids and not getting reimbursed because I know for a fact that's true.

In 2010, the Fed.gov. approved $26 billion in aid to school districts and states to prevent large-scale layoffs of teachers and public employees ...that ain't peanuts.

And we let them use it to control content and testing. Absolutely not one of the powers they have any claim to, and smart states and local governments should tell them to stick it. While they do have some ability to fund food for the poor kids, actually directing and pushing an education agenda is absolutely something the local governments should tell them to shove it over...

Yes, and which party did that benefit, and which pres signed the law?

And liberals still demand we cut military spending.....why is that ?.....Forget it, thats another thread

You know, I really don't give a shit how many crayons or gold stars they have to buy.....$76.00 a hour ought cover that an more if they MUST had those crayons.
and its not what the thread is about.

Changing the subject may work for you most of the time but not this time.....

Chicago's elementary school day is 5 hrs 45 minutes....(the national avg. is 6 hrs 42 min.) (7 hrs. for seconday school, nat. avg is 6.6 hrs.)

170 days a year (180 days normal school year) for an average wage of about 75k......no soc. sec. and a pension pending of about 42 k.....

The simple question was .... is this sufficient compensation for these teachers.....?

And I haven't said it is or it isn't, I'm the one asking.

In Colorado, teachers pay for continuing education - and then get raises for it.

I just spent almost $200 for "classroom supplies" for my two children, so with 24 - 30 kids per class, and 800 kids in the school, well, we can just dismiss the old Teacher Union lament about teachers "buying their own classroom supplies" out of their own pocket.

So, Chicago teachers. Since you think you're so valuable, just quit. Work in the private sector. And see how much you're REALLY worth...

Because for many people, the paycheck is not the sum total of the reason they work. Many people, teachers, social workers, therapists, firemen, cops, and others, do what they do so they can make a difference. That is not to say that the pittance we pay teachers isn't shameful, considering they are one of the big deciding factors in how our futures will be.
No one is downplaying the importance of parents. But those parents are doing what they do for THEIR child. Teachers do it for someone else's children.

Selfish, greedy people like FactsRMissing don 't understand that not everyone is motivated by the allure of money.

I am not gathering receipts from friends to scan and post on a forum. Don't be ridiculous.

And if you cannot take the word of the media outlets I have listed, perhaps the issue is with you? CNN is part of the conspiracy? The St Augustine local news?

The articles are accurate. If you choose to discount them, find evidence that they are inaccurate.

It's just another bullshit excuse so he doesn't have to admit he's full of it with regards to another topic.

Government has to be involved in some aspects, like teaching Creationism, it has shown that some states can not make good decisions when it comes to curriculum. I agree about leaving some decisions to the states, but ot all.

You work?

Again all bullshit. You clowns always say "teachers don't do it for the money" yet we always hear the greedy fuckers complaining about the money.

Sorry. But they should be getting better outcomes.

Did you know that teaching majors have the lowest SAT scores? Where did this nonsense of worshipping teachers start? It was a noble profession before unions ruined it

Teachers have the LOWEST SAT scores?

REALLY?!?

Well then, since you demand verification from others, then you've obviously got some corroboration to back up your stupidity.

Show everyone the data that proves conclusively what you claim.

The reality is we don't pay them a "pittance", that their unions have negotiated a heavily backend advantage to their contracts doesn't change that teachers after a time make decent money and often outstrip those in private industry with equivalent degrees.

Their unions have negotiated away some current benefits so that they can receive a massive retirement at the back end, as well as pay increases that make it a worthwhile profession after about 12 years where they make equivalent or more than counterparts in the private sector.

The idea that everybody has ignored them for centuries is a bit much. People respect teachers, at least all the people that I choose to hang with do, and wouldn't treat them as crappily as people read about so often when talking about stuff like this.

It is also a myth that none of them get reimbursed for continuing education classes. In almost every school district you fill out forms and as long as it is a requisite course you get reimbursed. Amazingly they also often get to take these courses off on their taxes as well, up to $10,000, but most require only six credit hours over five years and to do the requisite course work you will never spend that much.

They have massive incentive to get their Masters Degree as the pay difference is HUGE at the top end of the scale, therefore most teachers will have one of these...

Even in a poor district, like ours, if you are buying supplies you can fill out reimbursement forms. So far not one of my wife's have been rejected.

The same with continuing education, some districts reimburse teachers, others don't have the funds, but still expect teachers to continue their educations.

So much stupid bullshit in one single post...where should I start?

Obviously, if you believe the supplies teachers buy out of their own pockets costs one dollar then you are completely off your nut and have no clue as to what real life is like...

So Chicago area students have a 5 hour 45 minute day? do teachers show up 60 seconds BEFORE the first class?

OR are they at school for HOURS BEFORE AND AFTER class is dismissed?

The fight in Chicago is not about money, its about tenure and merit promotion.

No one gets paid the minute they get to work or until the minute they leave, nor should they.....no matter what profession it is.....moron....whats you silly point ?

I would normally get to work about 30 minutes early to park, take a leak, and have a coffee and bullshit with the previous shift ....and just to relax and get ready....doesn't everyone ?....Stay a few minutes to let the traffic thin out....

So I see you seem to now agree with the 5/45 work day in Chicago, not that it matters........its irrelevant except to hourly compensation....

is $75,000 +benefits enough....thats the question....should Rahm Emanuel, the Dem. mayor give them what they want...? Simple enough question, no
need to go off on stupid tangents....

and that too, is for another thread......

Hows your hourly compensation doing.....$250, 350+ a courtroom hour ?.....Hope your sec. gets at least some med. coverage, big spender.
40% or so of settlements.....not bad.
