A Christian nation elects Trump.

I always thought you only had to look at how carefully our founding fathers were to keep all religions out of governing this nation.
the founders version of America had most power with the states - and the states were not restricted by this separation clause until after the civil war. No sense bringing the founders into this

The United States has never suffered a civil war. The so-called 'Civil War' was a war between two nations.
That war changed NOTHING concerning the 1st amendment or any State constitution.

States are NOT restricted by any such 'separation clause'. There is NO 'separation clause' anywhere. There never was.

The federal government (and only the federal government) is restricted from banning any religion or from making any religion a state religion (at the federal layer).

States themselves, DID have State religions. It is legal for them to do so, should that be authorized by their constitution. Currently, all States have restrictions similar to the federal one in their own constitutions. They cannot ban most religions, and they can no longer declare a State religion.

The 1st amendment of the Constitution of the United States does NOT apply to the States.
The 2nd one does, though!
