A good week for evolutionary theory

A total of 6 scientist (5 Americans and 1 Israeli) will share the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Medicine. Their research on ribosomes and telemeres touch at the very heart of evolutionary theory and advances seminal evolutionary theory work done by Nobel predecessors Pauling, Crick, Watson, Wilkins and Rosiland Franklin (She would have shared the prize for the discovery of DNA with Crick and Watson had she not died from cancer before the prize was awarded for the discovery. The Swedish Science Acadamy, as policy, does not award the Nobel Prize posthumosely. That is a shame as she does not recieve the historical credit she deserves as the co-discoverer of DNA).

One of the Nobel Prize winners for Medicine was Elizabeth Blackburn. The Nobel Prize Award for Blackburn serves as refutation of her firing from the National Council on Bioethics, by the Bush administration, for voicing her opposition to George W. Bush's asinine policies on stem cell research.

What did they win the prize for in specific?

The three chemist won the prize for mapping the process by which ribosomes produce proteins inside the cell.

The three winners in Medicine won the prize for discovering the existence and nature of telemerase an enzyme within the telemeres of chromsomes (the end plates of DNA on chromsomes that holds them together structurally). Telemerase helps prevent degeneration of chromsomes which underlies such things as the aging process and cancer.

The work that led to the Nobel awards was great. Also this week the discovery of Ardi was announced. The Discovery Channel has an upcoming documentary on that.

I am looking forward to the documentary on Ardi. Fascinating discovery.

I'd heard about Ardipethicis Ramidus. Is it a predecessor to the Australiopeticenes?

I think that's one thing being considered. It predates Lucy by enough time to be an ancestor. The reports so far have been intriguing but not detailed enough for the questions that we might like to ask. I'm looking foreward to this special.

I think they should carve a few exceptions for the posthumous rule. Ghandi, for one, who died merely a few days before the nomination period was over, definitely should have been given an exception.

Might be evidence of ID, but and IDer who used evolution has its vehicle and not some old man with a white beard in a sky mansion who created the earth 8k years ago, playing in a sandbox making cute little sand people and breathing life into them and then taking a rib, a really good whittling knife and creating a help mate who then had just two kids, both males and populated the world to the tune of 6 billion people.

You don't know the story well at all, nor the fact that the Bible never mentions female get, except for Mary in the line of David. Adam and Eve had more than just Cain and Able.

If any argument can be made for presenting the award posthumasely Ghandi and Rosiland Franklin would be it.

So they slept with their sisters? I know I know there were OTHERS who were somehow left out of the creation story, on the editors floor, but the story is still nothing more than a nice fair tale.
