A hatchet is being taken to NASA

Wrong. DEI, Affirmative Action, and the like are repackaged racism, sexism, preferential hiring practices and nothing else. Candidates are not picked on the basis of ability or experience, but rather on the color of their skin and what's between their legs. Quotas are quotas.

If using quotas was wrong, then using quotas to fix the use of quotas is wrong too. You can't justify using the evil you want eliminated to eliminate it. Make the playing field level and move forward. In time the system will correct itself.
You assume that DEI employees are not qualified for the jobs. The entire point is they are and they have not been afforded the opportunity. They are high ranking employees. Quotas forced employers to hire people they would not have given a chance. Now they know they are as good workers as anyone else.

I've personally seen it, and more than once. I've had to deal with that shit repeatedly over my career. People promoted on the basis of race, gender, or some other quality that has nothing to do with job performance. Having an incompetent boss who got promoted on DEI or Affirmative Action, or whatever you want to call it, is for shit.

And, no, they aren't good workers. They are fuck ups promoted far beyond their level of incompetence. What you forget is there's a limited pool of individuals applying for the job and the qualities sought are based on racism, sexism, or other traits that have nothing to do with competence so even if one or two people who are competent apply, if they don't meet those arbitrary standards someone subpar get the position and then their stupidity, incompetence, and inability to do the job drag everything else down the shitter.
