A Philosopher and a Slaver, but No Longer a Name on a Library

Trinity College Dublin is to remove George Berkeley’s name from its biggest library because of the Irish philosopher’s links with slavery in the 18th century.

The university said on Wednesday it would “dename” the Berkeley library and review an academic award that carries his name, as well as portraits of the scholar.

Berkeley was born in County Kilkenny, entered Trinity in 1700 and became a celebrated philosopher, scientist and Anglo-Irish Anglican bishop.

The library is not Berkeley’s only namesake.

The University of California, Berkeley, was also named for the philosopher. According to the Berkeley Historical Society, trustees of the then-private college settled on naming it after him in 1866, inspired in part by his missionary zeal and a poem he wrote:

It was a different time but yes, that doesn’t excuse it.

Abolition started because some common sense person looked around and said this shit is fucked up.
