included a call for the right to vote for "negro men". Reportedly, that was the final straw for John Wilkes Booth who heard the speech and assassinated him a few days later.

Good conservative words. There's a reason why Lincoln was a Republican and the Democrats were slavers were in those days.

It was a radical pivot point in history that America elected a man in 1860 who openly thought slavery was wrong, and was determined to stop it's expansion into the western territories. America had sorely needed a president who thought slavery was a cancer on the nation.

As for Lincoln believing blacks were generally social inferiors to whites, the United States probably did not have a president who actually thought blacks were the social equals of whites until Jimmy Carter or maybe even Bill Clinton.

Lincoln did evolve in his views. At the end, he thought black males should be allowed to vote, if they were highly educated or if they had served in the Union army.
