Vladimir Putin facing 'military riots' as Russian 'discontent' explodes over Ukraine
Vladimir Putin is hoping to secure his fifth term in office in March but dissent over the ongoing war in Ukraine and the death of his main political opponent could fuel unrest across the country.
Vladimir Putin has been warned he might face "military riots" as dissent over his leadership is "growing" around Russia.
Former presidential speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov said failure to secure an all-out victory in Ukraine, paired with the death of Alexei Navalny, is likely to fuel public restlessness ahead of next month's election.
Gallyamov said: "Sooner or later, it will definitely backfire because this discontent is growing."
Navalny died on February 16 while serving a 30-year prison sentence for inciting and financing extremism as well as fraud.
He maintained his innocence and dismissed the charges as politically motivated, citing his long-standing opposition to Putin and his party.
