All this talk about the death of the Republican party.... They will return!

So many have declared the Republican party dead, or at least relegated to a future of being at most a regional party.... But I disagree.

The Republican party will emerge very strong. Finally the radical wing that was ushered in after the election of Ronald Regan will be oustered, the moderates will win the day. A strong, small government, finscally conservative, socially moderate (liberal by todays conservative standards) will emerge and AMERICA will be better off for it!

Or... They will try to keep the Linbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney, wing of the party and the predictions of death might be correct. Hopefully the radical wing is dying off.

It is a cyclical thing. The repubs screw the pooch royally and the country too.
People quit believing their political myths.
Dems get things better.
People forget and start believing republican myths once again.

I hope you are incorrect, but that seems to be what has happened over the past 30 years anyway.

Any particular myths you have in mind?

Well one major one that links to several others.

That businesses will regulate themselves properly.

well lets hope they get their heads out of their asses soon.
How long can we expect dem leaders to be the consistend spileless jellyfish.
Obama/Pelosi will soon be putting a foot up Ried's ass, I just hope they don't man up before cap and scheme is passed

Most of the deregulation of the Regan years and the lack of enforcement during the Bush years.

Other than the fact Reagan was a Republican what did you dislike about his deregulation? Was it deregulation of a specific industry?

Oh no, you want him to point out specifics instead of just complaining about republican deregulation? How dare you!

As for the demise of either party, that will only really happen when either one party actually does what it promises or the american public starts having a memory that lasts longer than 4 or 8 years. (or the masses become educated - but then that might be the myth)

Why do you think Republicans always want to cut head start!

The reality is that we really only have choices from two party's. So let's say one is not an ideologue. They may remember the Democrats fucked the country years ago so they voted Republican then the Republicans fucked the country recently so they voted Democrat. Then the Democrats fuck the country again... So even with a good memory the choices are always the same.

I think everyone is missing the point.

Whether the Republican Party can re-invent itself and survive is only a symptom of the larger issue. What will not survive in the mainstream is right-wing conservative ideology and the Republican Party will not survive as long as it clings to it. Any other course is simply lipstick on a pig.

The bigger argument is not the fate of the Republican Party but rather the fate of conservatism.

That's a good point BAC because if the Democratic Party came out tomorrow talking conservative/libertarian economic policies that I support I would be one big Democrat cheerleader. At the end of the day it is about the ideas not the party(ies) itself.

Except to the partisans, that is absolutely correct brother.

While I consider the Reagan the worst president in modern times, I feel sorry for the old geezer, I wonder what he would have thought had he retained his mind. Reagan began the decline of the working woman and his belief in the free market lead to the current meltdown. Reagan made Bush's failure possible. Bush Sr was right when he called it voodoo economics but spending like crazy worked for a bit and the myth was born.

this piece sums up much his destruction of the middle class.
