TOLD prison officials and staff that if they put another inmate in his cell he'd kill them. So, they put an inmate in his cell and he killed him. In fact, he did this THREE times. He TOLD prison staff he had nothing to lose and would do it again after admitting openly that he'd killed all three men. Now he's looking at 3 or possibly 4 more life sentences for killing these inmates...

Now, wouldn't offing him after his first felony offense in prison have done wonders to not allow him to commit virtually all of the crimes he has while in prison? Worse, he's going to commit more--he even says so--regardless of the outcome of his latest charges and eventual conviction(s).

After four years in the Lewis Prison complex in Buckeye, Wassenaar attempted to escape with his cellmate, Steven Coy. They plotted to escape from the kitchen to an arsenal tower and through the administration building.

"I've got nothing to lose, and this is an escape," Wassenaar reportedly told an officer at the beginning of what became a 15-day hostage situation rather than his prison escape.


The Arizona Republic detailed his and Coy's attempted escape in 2004.

In the early morning hours when newbie officers were on duty, the two inmates fled the kitchen, raping, assaulting and tying up two workers while en route to the tower. They made it to the watchtower but were trapped as more and more officers surrounded it.

The pair took two correctional officers hostage, one of whom was a mother. Both sexually assaulted her on the first day. The other suffered head injuries, according to The Republic.

Negotiations lasted more than two weeks. Eventually, Wassenaar surrendered after being promised a transfer to the Midwest. Coy also gave himself up. The hostages survived.

Coy was serving a life sentence for two counts of armed robbery and aggravated assault at the time of the attempted escape, along with a slew of other sentences for previous offenses. He added seven more life sentences.

Solitary confinement is cruel and makes prisoners crazier. You cannot keep them in solitary forever. When they get out, you have created a bigger problem. Cruelty diminishes the person doing it.
