An Historic Moment Missed by Obama

I wonder why it is proper to use "an" before the word "historic" in grammar? Usually, "an" is used when the next word begins in a vowel, but "historic" is an exception. Sure, there is "honorable" but the "h" is silent, so it's understandable. It's not because it's "h" because you wouldn't say "an helping hand" would you? Anyway... it always seemed curious to me.... oh wait, I was posting a thread about something important!! Hmmmm..... oh yeah...

I think Obama missed an opportunity to immortalize himself in history forever. Being that Obama has a very close association with Islam, he possesses a unique attribute that really no other president before him has had. He holds the most powerful position in the world, and his statements matter. He could have used his opportunity to speak out on the mosque in NYC, to call for a unity and cooperation between the Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Catholic religions. He could have suggested a unified council of these religions to oversee coordination of a true outreach through a multi-religious community center, celebrating our commitment to bridging understandings as Americans, and promoting religious tolerance for all, regardless of our religious background. He could have turned this into a moment of profound change for mankind, a moment that would have always been looked back on with reverence and respect, and honored accordingly by those who would have celebrated it.

Obama took the less courageous route, and made it a political issue to supposedly hammer the right with, lecturing us about religious tolerance, and fully supporting the building of the mosque, but having to obfuscate the next day, when he is 1,000 miles away from the Muslim audience. Of course, the moment is now lost, he can't change anything he has said or done, it's all water under the bridge. But Obama missed a golden opportunity to immortalize himself as the Great Healer. Instead, he will probably become synonymous with Divisiveness.

"Immortalize himself in history forever"...over the construction of a downtown mosque/community center in NY?

"Around the bend", as they say...

dixie....wtf...is the "h" hard or soft? seriously, this is all you have to bitch about....

yes, obama screwed up on this as usual....but to be a grammar nazi?

Grammar Nazi? Nooo.. you misunderstand my little pointed headed neocon friend, I wasn't being a Nazi at all, I was actually questioning the Nazi-like insistence of saying "an historic" instead of "a historic" in grammar! That's all!! ....and it wasn't even a part of the thread really... just a thought, as I pondered the title of the thread! No big deal, you didn't have to comment on that.

I don't know that I would say Obama "screwed up" here, as much as he just missed his chance to deliver on his promise of hope and change, once again. There have already been several moments in his presidency, where he could have fundamentally and profoundly shaped history forever, by making a bold and courageous statement, and he continues to miss the "lay up" and flounder. It's really very Jimmy Carteresque!
