A man wrote into Newsday to say that he had been a stay at home dad for 15 years, and he would give anything to go back to that. He said that his kids never told him what to do, or what time he had to be there. He said he put them on the bus and then had hours of time that was all his. No woman could have written it because she would have been called lazy. Personally, I believe he spoke the truth, but only for people above a certain income. There is no doubt that the financially struggling stay at home mom has to work very hard to make ends meet. Some of these women can't go to work because they are poorly educated and low skilled and what they would earn simply would not cover the cost of gas and other car expenses, clothes, and the big one - day care. These are all things that liberals, please note, not democrats, but liberals, would love to talk about and even have some solutions for!
And that is yet another reason why the right would rather play the politics of resentment and refight the mommy wars than start to talk about this in real life terms. You simply cannot talk about it in real life terms without bringing up class. And that they will not do. They will not do it. Thus, an insult against Ann Romney, a mind-bogglingly wealthy woman, is an insult against stay at home moms. Pure silliness.
