The Force is With Me
Texas Cop Shoots Man In His Driveway

It's just another case of police putting a bullet in an unarmed man.

In light of the recent shooting of Oscar Grant by police in Oakland comes a similar story out of Bellaire, Texas. In this case, police shot a former pro baseball player's son, Robert Tolan, outside of his Bellaire home. The shooting took place on Wednesday, December 31, 2008.

Anthony Cooper, who is also the son of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Bobby Tolan, said a Bellaire police officer approached him and his brother in their driveway at about 2 a.m., after they returned home from a fast-food restaurant.

Cooper, 20, said the officer told them to get down on the ground.

"We were going into the house and our parents came outside," Cooper said. "Our parents said, 'What's going on?' They didn't say anything to us but, 'Get down on the ground.' They said, 'Well, it's a stolen vehicle, ma'am.' She's (the mother) like, 'What stolen vehicle? That's his vehicle.'" ...The vehicle was later determined not to be stolen," Assistant Police Chief Byron Holloway said. "The license plate was run, but exactly why they believed it was stolen ... we just don't have the information to make a comment on it."

Cooper said the officer then harassed Tolan's mother. Then, once Tolan turned to yell at the officer, the officer shot the 20-year-old in the chest.

Tolan was then rushed to Ben Taub Hospital with injuries to his liver and his lung. He is now listed in fair condition.

Tolan's family said they want Police Office Sgt. Jeff Cotton to face charges. Tolan's family's attorney said the shooting may have been racially motivated.

"There's no doubt in my mind that if these had been white kids, this would not happen," David Berg said. "There is no justification for what happened."

And they wonder why there's no respect for the law.

I love the "It's a stolen vehicle ma'am.." crap. Just sick.

Welcome to the "post-racist America."

This is becoming epidemic, yet African-Americans are left to fight this injustice alone.

Will the "black" president utter a peep about this injustice?

... doubt it.

I'm glad he survived to tell about it, and hopefully to testify against them and get them convicted. These guys have to go away for attempted murder. It's total bullshit.

Bobby Tolan was more well known as being a member of the Cincinnati Reds. I was a fan of his father back when he was with the Big Red Machine. You're a bit late on hearing this. This happend over a month ago.

Makes you wonder what his crime was? Parking while black?

Hurray!

We have entered a brave new world of equality in which a black man and a white man have an equal chance of being shot in their driveway by law enforcement.

If only Dr. King were still alive to see this day...

Personally, I fail to see how an incident in Canada has anything to do with a young black man being shot in his driveway in Texas and race relations in the United States.

Beats the hell outta driving while Asian.

Tell me about it....my wife is Asian.....and Jimmy Johnsons biggest fan....and drives like him too!!!

Honestly, though, in Western WA, the drivers are so bad, you can rarely tell them apart. I've had only one bad experience with Asian drivers, and maybe a few occasions of frustration, because driving around here is a frustrating experience in principle.

That's funny about your wife, though. :clink:

The cop needs to face charges and spend a few decades in prison.

Yes, he does. We had a grad student whose father was American caucasian and married her Korean mother while he was stationed over there. She told me that she and her mother were stopped by a Statie while driving on the Interstate, ostensibly for speeding or something. When she tried to respond to his questions, he kept repeating, "I can't understand your accent." She's American, has no accent except one he should have readily understood (Texan if anything). They probably weren't speeding either. This was purely race-based harassment.

We have to let law enforcement, and the public at large for that matter, know that this is not acceptable, and there will be undesirable legal consequences for people who behave in this manner.

In the case posted today, I was outraged when it happened and time hasn't dulled that one little bit.

BAC, there are plenty whites like me that are discusted with this continued total lack of respect of Black Men. Texas obviously doesn't have enough of them nor do La, MS

Don't forget at night. There's some sort of unwritten curfew. It happens in the poor neighborhoods quite often. I was once arrested for looking "suspicious" at night when I was a kid, it was even before the "curfew". Long hairs were not treated quite right and there were many long hairs where I come from...
