That's a good question. The Leafs estimated mpg is 106 and I don't know the answer to your question.
 
I keep cars until the average cost of repairs per month is more than it would cost me to get a new one.

Actually that's 16.7 million vehicles. 6.2 million cars. 6.5 million light trucks and 4 million SUV/Crossovers. 12.7 million is just cars and light trucks and 2008 total vehicle sales was 13.2 million units. So that's a net gain of 3.5 million more vehicles produced in 2011 vs 2008. It's also 100,000 more units then what sold in 2007 (6.1 million units).

Well the total cost numbers are projected costs and don't mean shit if you drop an enginve or a tranny or the mother fucker catches on fire so yea you have a point about reliability and practicality but again, this is a developing technology. We now know a dependable car can be made that gets' nearly 100 mpg. We now need to improve it. We've come a long way since the Model T Topper!

It's a cool technology no doubt, the only thing I'm disputing that you are saying is total cost equalling and practicality. You can't jump in a volt and go on vaction.

I agree. Though if dependability is not an issue and I needed a new car it would be an excellent option for me as I only commute about 10 mile a day. Having said that...if you're driving only 10 miles a day it really doesn't matter if your car is a gasguzzler or not. My van gets about 20 mph but that's two days of commuting for me. :)

I think I'll wait till the technology is a little more mature.

Then why do we have the EPA telling us older cars pollute the environment?? And why did Obama bail out GM? Think of the money it would have save if we did not bail them out.
