Another racist republican politician

Oh, I'm sure you are. Though I don't know what "on it's own" adds. I mean, it's a racist statement.

Let me explain it to you. Tekky called this guy a racist for saying the phrase in question. I said that the phrase in question - on its own - is not enough to warrant that charge.

I really don't see what's so challenging to understand about that. It's pretty simple - pretty straightforward.

Joe Biden with his black and articulate line he dropped on Obama.

That doesn't come close to this shucking and jiving thing IMO. I can't believe Cuomo said it and my opinion of him was already very low. But I wouldn't have believed that. Come on, this really goes beyond somehting a clueless white dude like Joe Biden might say. That articulate thing was very subtly racist, I can definitely see it being unconscious racism even. Shucking and jiving? Jesus.

I guess I misunderstood what you meant by "a charge of racism." We're kinda talking past one another here. Let's try this. DO you agree with this sentiment: "I don't know if that guy is a racist or not, but his comment certainly was racist."

I know you like basking in the glow of your newly minted contrarian-to-the-liberals status and all, but no need to get snippy.

Sorry; didn't mean to be that snippy. I know what you're saying.

I kind of agree with that sentiment, but not fully. I think racism is more in the intent when the phrase itself is used.

I think everyone has used "eenie meenie miny mo" at some point, but I wouldn't go calling everyone racist for doing so, though its orgins certainly are tied to racism.

While I wouldn't call people who use racist terminoology racist, I think it's appropriate to call out the racist statement as racist and suggest that it not be used. I mean, when I was growing up "gay" was just another term for "uncool" and we weren't being intentionally homophobic when we used it, but it didn't change the fact that using "gay" as a generic derogatory term (or playing "smear the queer" wihtout even thinking about the gay-bashing imagery whatsoever) was basic homophobic language. So, yeah, people who are not racists say racist stuff all the time, but they shouldn't.

Oh, does that rhetoric offend you, Damo? Maybe you could explain how it doesn't accurately describe the behavior of the House Republicans and their Pied Piper, Ted Cruz.

Tell me clearly which people have been killed to promote their agenda. Be precise, give names. We can list the victims of 9/11.

Don't try to pretend that a threat from the President to shut down the government with a veto if the bill that hits his desk after negotiations between two houses of elected congress is the same thing as those who are negotiating killing people to put forward an agenda or that the person who vetoes isn't the one slashing and burning, because we aren't the stupid unwashed masses that you are trying to reach with that rhetoric.

The reality is, if you go by threats to shut down the government, there is only one branch that could be called terrorists, hostage takers, kidnappers, etc. and it isn't Congress who are negotiating and have passed legislation that would keep that monstrous government running.

Debt ceiling, not funding of the government, is where I've seen the hostage taker/suicide bomber metaphor applied. And, no, Congress has not passed legislation to keep the government running.

And it's a metaphor. Republicans are threatening harm to non-combatants (the public) to achieve political goals. The terrorism metaphor seems quite apt under the circumstances.

I completely agree with you.

You see the subject though calls the person a racist for making a racist comment. Maybe Tk knows more about this individual's background who made the comment but I would surmise she probably doesn't.

If he had apologized, I might not have called him a racist. He doubled-down and said it wasn't a racist comment.

I'm happy if he proves me wrong and all his votes and other actions show he's not a racist.

So, cry racist, and ask questions later?

Mighty white of you, tekky.

Yes, the house did indeed pass legislation to keep the government running.

Your partisanship is showing. I'll apply your logic. I see Obama's threat to shut down the government through a childish tantrum he calls a veto to be "hostage taking"... Obama is therefore a terrorist and is holding the economy hostage to protect his job-killing legislation. Now, if I believed you were stupid enough to fall for rhetoric because you were a low-information voter I'd be all satisfied that I had done my job.

I'll note that you can note not even one single person who has been killed in order to promote their agenda, cannot name one person who has been held hostage, or kidnapped. Your "logic" falls short, and that you are still trying to promote the inane stupidity fit only for those who do not pay attention. Your audience here is too plugged in to fall for stupid rhetorical nonsense like this.

(1) The House is not "Congress."

(2) The metaphor applies to the debt ceiling, not to funding the government.

(3) The hostage is the economy and, thereby, the general public. And no, harm has not yet befallen the hostage. Yet. In the suicide bomber analogy, the bomb has not yet been detonated. So the argument that no one has been harmed (yet) undermines the metaphor is kinda stupid.

if its an apt description (shucking and jiving) of Obama's words/selling/campaigning - much more likely to let it go, and just write it off as racially insensitive.

per Damoclese's post:

whole lotta hyperbolye there too. 'Politics ain't beanbag' - nothing to get too upset about by either character.

The other thing about the "shucking and jiving" comment is, of course, it's not describing at all what Obama is doing.

From wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuckin%27_and_jivin%27
Shuckin' and jivin' (or shucking and jiving) is a slang term for the behavior of joking and acting evasively. More generally, the term can also refer to the speech and behavioral mechanisms adopted in the presence of an authoritative figure.[1] Shuckin' and jivin' usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, used to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment. The term is also used in the Southern United States referring to deceit or mischief involving lies.[citation needed]

Obama is saying, simply and firmly, he will not sign a bill that includes defunding of parts of the ACA, even if it is included in the bill to extend funding of the govt. He's not doing at all what S&J was defined as.

So along with making a racist comment and doubling down on it, the guy made a dead wrong comment.

Guilty until proven otherwise for you, eh? I'm glad you weren't on any jury lately.

Anyway, please prove to me that you are not racist. I sure hope you are able to do it, it will make me happy. How much time should we give you and he to prove this negative?

the OP mentioned this:
intended to mock the Obama administration's decision to delay certain parts of the Affordable Care Act.
shucking & jivin' 1 definition:

joking and acting evasively
one could make the case the "delays" are evasive - Obama does joke around in his speeches.

Honestly this is much ado about nothing. Not the best way to phrase it, but still in the ballpark of objective reality.

There are bigger fish to fry ( to continue the synonyms)
