Anxious and Frightened; The American Childhood

Jarod, they go to private schools because the public ones suck.

Why is that?

How large are classrooms today?

How much are teachers paid?

How long has it been since our schools have been modernized?

How many state legislatures have cut funds to schools, teachers, and students? (Do you remember when parents of students didn't have to pay for their supplies?)

How many parents take an active role in their children's education? (What happened to the PTA?)

Above all...why are we funnelling our state and government money to private schools instead of public schools?

I think the anxiety is spoon fed to them by the idiots in the public school system who don't think things through but rather go with knee jerk reactions to situations. You know... like you.

how do you explain to them that some guy who lived near the school came in and mowed down a whole classroom worth of kids.

How many were injured and are recovering from horrible wounds but we dont hear about them?

You DONT!

I have several friends who are scared to death for there kids, they happen to be VERY CONSERVATIVE FOX NEWS WATCHING GUN HORDING REPUBLICANS, who are afraid to allow there kids to do just about anything. They go to private school because the public ones are not safe, they are not allowed to sleep over at friends houses because sex abuse is so rampant, they cant play in the front yard because of the HIGH risk of being kidnapped, they wont let them swim at the beach because of sharks.... These are not made up examples, they also have a closet full of guns and one under the bed because they are sure drug crazed liberals will break into the house to steal the 72 inch television.

I suggested getting rid of the fancy television and you would have thought I suggested selling the kids into white slavery!

I have very little worth stealing at my house 1) Because I dont need it, 2) I dont want to spend time or energy protecting it, 3) I would not want my family at risk of anyone who wanted to steal it.

Just another of Jarod's bullshit 'I have a friend' stories. Funny how he always knows people that fit the stereotype he wishes to believe in to a T

1) This is being taught to kids at a different school. The author lives in MA, not CT Desh. Why are they having these drills Desh?

2) You can explain to kids who have seen/heard about Newton that there are bad people out there. You do not have to instill fear into them during the explanation. That is what this school is doing.

3) Obama is a politician.

Well its true, but I can prove it so you are free to choose not to belive it. I suspect you know some people who fit the same pattern, if you think about it.

Regardless of where you come down on guns, people cannot really believe there will be no consequences to raising our children like this can they?
Oh this whole guns in schools for security idea is a horribly bad one. There were armed guards at Columbine and they didn't prevent any killings. A determined nut job will find a way to kill and there's not a lot you can do about that other than identify those nutjobs and remove their means to do harm one way or the other.

Though I'm all for security personal in schools cause there's far more beneficial things these professionals bring to the plate then an armed presence.

The fact remains, and the gun nuts seem to be utterly clueless on this point, is that an armed camp is hardly conducive to a quality learning environment. It is conducive to authoritarian conformity but it sure as hell doesn't promote learning. Not real learning.

Now if they want to have classes teaching the safe and proper handling of fire arms I have no problem with that, assuming the school has the resources to do so, (my guess is most don't or won't due to liabilty issues) but the idea of making our schools an armed camp is the height of stupidity.

The solution is obviously gun drills from our wonderful public school system.
Not a bad idea. When the alarm bell rings the teacher will place the students in three ranks, the shortest in the front ranks, the tallest in the back ranks, distribute M-16's to them and drill them in shooting from prone, kneeling and standing positions......and god help you if you get three detentions in one year!!! They'll have a speciall wall at the back of the schools for that.

There was ONE at Columbine. He was told to stay OUTSIDE. He exchanged fire with the two cowards as they entered.

Saying 'there was an armed guard at Columbine and thus there should be no guns carried by teachers' is just blatantly stupid. What if ten teachers HAD been armed and trained at Columbine? You think the outcome would have been the same?

LMAO... you truly are clueless. The gun safe could be in the teachers drawer. The kids wouldn't even have to know the gun was there. You fear mongers act like the teacher would be holding the gun in his/her hand at all times waving it around in the kids faces.

You think the local PD couldn't/wouldn't offer to train them for free?

You just use phrases like 'armed camp' because it sounds menacing and it is used to promote your fear mongering.

See folks....here it is.....cluelessness. I don't want my kid going to school in an armed camp that projects an authoritarian environment.....IT'S BAD EDUCATION FOLKS!!!

Kids need to feel secure to feel free to explore and push envelopes and you aren't going to get that in an armed camp. I mean you didn't ever bother to think about what you wrote SF. Think about it, how willing are you going to engage your teacher knowing they have a gun locked in their desk? What your advocating is a lousy environment for learning.

Those kids are there to get educated, not drilled. It isn't boot camp for minors.

Describe this 'armed camp' Mutt. Do you envision teachers a runnin' around totin' guns and waving them in the faces of kids?

The stupidity of your post is astounding. Do you honestly believe that kids (assuming they knew their was a gun in the desk) would stop exploring or pushing envelopes? Why? Are you suggesting our teachers are such neanderthals that they would whip out the gun if challenged and shoot the kids?

Like I said, you simply wish to continue with your fear mongering.

Who the hell suggested it be a boot camp? Oh yeah, NO ONE.
