The Charge of the Light Brigade

Crimean War: religion anad territory.

can russia give up its sole year round warm water port?

i think that war over the crimea will be the ultimate result of differences between the ukraine, russia and the u s of a along with nato

It was a little before my time. But yes, this is an old problem. But like all of Obama's wars this does not threaten us or our allies.
Lets sit this one out. This is not the distraction BO desperatly needs.

Ah yes....the Charge of the Light Brigade comes to mind.

why did russia fight so hard for the crimea?

why did Britain fight russia so hard for the same real estate?

the charge of the light brigade is a prime example of the folly of war, so why is it so romanticized? because brave men followed orders to their deaths...

Why do you pretend that Britain was the only player in this war? The French had 400,000 troops engaged and the Ottomans 300,000 to Britains 250,000.

This was basically Europe with Napoleon in the lead and the Ottomans against the Russia Tsar.

Why would Russia lose its port just because the pro-Russia Prime Minister was removed? Did the interim Government indicate they wukd kick Russia out?

putin has wanted the ukraine in the russian sphere of influence for some time.

he wants to 'reunite' the former soviet republics under russian rule. while he may not get all of the ukraine under russian rule, he sees an opportunity brought on by the cowardly former premier of the ukraine to annex the chrimean portion of the ukraine.

i have to admit that my recollection of the crimean war of the 1800s is poor, russia and later the ussr have wanted control of sebastapol and the warm water ports of the crimea and is using the predominately prorussian population to take it away from the rest of the ukraine.

also, putin does not care what other nations may or may not want. he mainly wants to extend his power base.

oh well

The great rule of war is, Never march on Moscow (or Leningrad, or Stalingrad, or the Crimea). It's not in Genesis, but the evidence for it is good.

Yeah, it's almost like he's trying to fight against us forcing NATO right up against the Russian border. I mean, if Russia were trying to form a military alliance with Mexico and South America, we'd be fine and dandy with it.

what about the people of the rest of the ukraine? they are not russians or prorussia

"Ukraine" isn't much of a country anyways. It's been two, or more, for hundreds of years. Likely the Eastern half is all Putin will concern himself with. And even if he doesn't, so what? We don't go hounding the British over Northern Ireland. We don't pester the French about Corsica or Brittany, the Canadians over Quebec. America isn't the arbiter of who isn't and isn't a country.

kinda sounds like iraq that was an attempt to force three disparate groups into one nation ad we know how that worked out

oh well

Yep; oh well. Nothing the world can do about the Soviet era tactics of Putin. We know everyone laughs at Kerry and Obama and their "red lines".
