I was. I currently sub for other general contractors. Besides, as long as the job is less than $1000, in Arizona you don't need a license. I used to have an R-11 but since I don't do enough work and getting it back would drive up my costs beyond what these people could afford, I'm not doing it.

In my state you have to be a master to work on your own.

Here you need to take two tests, one business, one trade / code. You submit a form showing that you have at least 4 years verifiable experience in the field, and you get licensed as a contractor. There are several ways to take trade exams outside of the contractor's licensing process but those are optional. It sounds like your state is heavily unionized and probably closed shop.

Sounds like a question someone way to the left of me would ask of someone doing discounted or pro bono work for the underprivileged. Gotta get the money from taxation to pay the licensed dude or we’re somehow cheating him. I often provide ingredients for and cook meals for the poor and underprivileged but I’m not a licensed chef.

Anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck and is trying to get ahead would know how big of a deal it is to have someone repair electrical problems or plumbing problems or … etc… and not have to pay union prices. For some it is the difference between making their house payment or … not.
