AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

Liberals aren't crazy or playing the race card when we bring this up. I know it's just one poll but still depressing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some Americans' more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.

You fail at statistics! The sample size is far too small to make meaningful assertions about the population. the confidence levels are in the 80 percentile

The tests included a "neutral image of a Chinese character," as opposed to the black, white, and Hispanic characters. So why is there nothing in this article about racist sentiments against Asians? Of course the implication is that only whites have racial prejudices and stereotypes.

So they showed people faces and then another face and asked people how they felt.
"Studies have shown that people consciously or unconsciously transfer their feelings about the photograph to the object they are rating."
Amazing, and here I thought anti-black sentiment was the kind of thing that made you go round with sheets on your head, little did I know how racist I could be just sitting in a small room looking at a picture of Kobe Bryant.

Now for actual racism, lets study how many people say derogatory or hateful things about Islam. Note, not make weird facial expressions or tend toward fear in the 3.8% more than normal category. I'm talking about people who bomb countries.

How would you go about testing to measure degrees of prejudice against some group?

You don't have to be in the KKK to be prejudice against black people. We could put a picture of an old white male who looks like he's in the 1% and there would probably be a good amount of prejudice against him. Same for some redneck or white kid with tattoos on his neck.

If people were being honest in this poll the percentage admitting to be prejudice against blacks would be close to 100%, and that includes black. Everyone has prejudices against each other including their 'own kind'. That's being human.

I guess this poll made you uncomfortable, as it should.
Knowing that occasionally I "micro judge" somebody? Sure, but it's not only blacks, I probably judge people who wear baggy pants, blondes with short skirts, asians with pocket protectors, hispanics with "gangster attire" and very fit men with military buzz cuts. As long as I'm not being a prick to them, I consider my job well done.
Mental racism is accepted, thoughts can go where they like, I'll start objecting as soon as people act on them. Until then, grow up and deal with some real problems.

I agree. Yet so many are critical of the study.

Yeah, then you can blame the "real problems" on their hoodies, haircut and clothes they were wearing and ignore the bigoted attitudes lying underneath.

I think we've seen in this campaign that prejudice is a real problem, and not just prejudice against blacks.

It does bother me and I don't have a problem bringing it to everyone's attention. Furthermore, I'll be happy to read any studies or polls showing the opposite of this one.

The idea that people react differently to images of people that look different is hardly cause for alarm. Its an innate biological reaction from our tribal days, which evolutionary wise, were last week.
