Are Romney and President Obama that much different?

I guess it depends on which Romney we get, the one who governed Mass. or the one who is running for the Republican Nomination.

I suspect the one who governed Mass is the true Romney, and for that reason I am looking toward this comming election with a comfortable and relaxed perspective. If Romney wins he will not be so much different than President Obama. Romney is not a GWB/Gingrich/Santorum/Huckleberry type of Republican so I do not fear the danger our nation was in during the 8 years of GWB and I doubt Romney will drive us into the largest recession this side of the depression nor will he take us into an unnecessary, mismanaged war in a place like Iraq.

The man who intentionally distanced himself from Ronald Reagan, supported the Pro-Choice movement and pratically authored the Health Care Bill can't be all bad.

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Just take note of the folks he hangs around with: the Repub Party. Like any politician he won't risk alienating his party so it's likely he'll fold like most politicians do.

Oh, Id still be voting for President Obama over Romney, I just belive they are very close to each other on the spectrum. The reason is that, politics aside, educated, smart people know that where President Obama is, is the right place for the nation..... You have

<Santroim..Backman...GWB......Gingrich...........Paul................................................................................................................Romney..Huntsman..President Obama>

Id like one, but its not going to happen.

Why arnt Republicans demanding a Conservative to run against President Obama?

Romney and Obama are the same, except for tax policy, spending policy, regulatory policy, welfare state policies, judicial appointments, and pretty much any other basic values that distinguish Republican administrations from Democratic ones.

I think the more relevant question is how would a Romney Administration differ from a "more conservative" Republican Administration. The answer, in my view, is not much. Just like I don't think an Obama Administration would be terribly different from a "more liberal" Democratic Administration.

I think what you're seeing of significance here is a fight for the heart and soul of the Repelican party. The centrist and moderates are gaining ascendency over the conservative and right wing of the party. Even if Romney were to win the nomination and lose to Obama the nation would owe him a debt of gratitude for this.

Oh Romney is a Republican. He's a patrician blue blood and that's who he's going to look after first and foremost. This is what Republicans do but he's not an extremist ideologue and Romney would govern competently like Obama and unlike Bush.

Obama cut taxes Romney raised them (or equivalent fees and eliminating loopholes) in Mass. Is that the type of difference you are talking about? Health care. The same. How would their spending policies differ? You think Romney could outspend Obama? They're the same. Regulatory? How do Romney and Obama differ on cap and trade (comparing Romney's time as Gov.) he basically tried the same thing Obama did. Judicial appointments would differ. Otherwise they are the same person with a different letter next to their name.

Romney stated last night that he would repeal Obamacare...

You'll have to pardon my skepticism about what politicians say they'll do on the campaign trail compared to what they do in office. If I see it done then I will commend him for it and state I was wrong for doubting him. Until that time I remain cynical.

I'm a skeptic as well but he has a plan in writing and it makes sense and is Constitutional.

If you think Romney's policies as president of the United States with a Congress composed of a right-wing Republican House (or House and Senate) would be the same as Romney's policies as Governor of Massachusetts with a left-wing state legislature dominated (and I mean dominated) by Democrats you need to have your head examined.

Romney is campaigning on cutting taxes in addition to an extension of the Bush tax cuts. Obama agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts as a compromise measure, but his deficit reduction proposal includes tax increases. On this issue, the two are not the same or anything close to it. On spending, Romney's has pledged to cut spending by $500 billion in four years and says he wants to "end deficit spending" while cutting revenues. On regulatory issues, you have got to be kidding me if you think that any Republican Administration, staffed by Republicans, would be anywhere close to any Democratic Administration whatsoever, particularly with a Republican House than wants to eliminate all regulations whatsoever. And this doesn't even get into Romney's proposal to amend the Clean Air Act to eliminate the EPA's ability to regulate carbon.

Give me a break.

How many Republicans before have claimed they were going to cut spending and didn't? Bush had a Republican majority in Congress and how much spending did they cut? Why do you think Romney is any different and will stick to his word?

I don't, but I don't think that Romney would be at all different from any other Republican, even a "more conservative" one. Republicans hate government spending, until they get to decide how the money gets spent.

Edit: My main point is that judging Romney by his time as governor of Mass is stupid as it is not at all indicative of what he would do if he were not constrained by a left-wing legislature.

As to your first point, exactly. Republicans spend just as much as Democrats there is no difference. They may want to spend it on different things but they spend none the less. They are the exact same.
