Are you ready for austerity?

Argumentum ad ignorantiam.

Do you have anything else? A reason why protectionism wouldnt create more jobs here, and thus revitalize our entire economy?

Protectionism makes locally produced goods more successful in the marketplace, giving domestic industry support. Do you understand this facet of protectionism?

A historical proof is not required, you just need to be able to think.

That's not a real logical fallacy, you know.

Read this carefully.

Protectionism is not going to be tried.

Find another dead horse to beat.

It's what we're going to do.

This horse is alive and kicking.

It's very telling that you cannot give a reason why it won't work, and instead engage in idiocy.

Yes. I do. Haranging people for "facts" is not debating. You have offered no opposition to any of my statements. That means i win.

Thanks AssHat. That may be the funniest post you have put up in a long time.

Cutting doesn't have to sharply affect the poor.

Pensions:
Use a claw-back system. Those whose income passes a certain level start to pay back some of the pension money they receive.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. If person #1 works someplace long enough to earn a pension, you want to make them pay it back because they worked hard and invested wisely? If they saved their money rather than blowing it, drove an older car rather than bought a new one every year, and put money into more secure, long-term investments, you want to punish them by not only cutting their pension, but making them pay back what they receive??

WTF?

No, there are much better cuts to be made. Cutting the defense budget by 1/3 would still leave us capable of defending ourselves quit well. And would be far better than to start cheating pensioners.

Protectionsm also guts our overseas markets. If we follow your ideas and start that, the other nations will respond by adding tariffs to all our incoming goods, effectively pricing us out of the game.

So instead of having a piece of a global market, we will have only a domestic market.

Not sound planning. History has shown it to be suicide.

There are two words by which governments on both sides of the Atlantic have duped their citizenry. They are 'Change' and 'Austerity'.

'Change' because it means absolutely nothing but is music to the ears of the discontent masses when issued from the mouths of prospective leaders.
'Austerity' because it is a cover-up word. What they actually mean when they use it is that the poor (or perhaps we should say the 'non-mega rich') will be forced to give more of their miserable lives towards the obscene comfort of those that hold the power.
These two small words, lapped like milk from the bowls laid before us, allow our 'masters' license to abuse their power and deny us the opportunity to question.
We, the ordinary people of the US and the UK need to wake up. The UK is heading for a major showdown in 2011. Have the Americans got the balls for the same thing? This is nothing to do with party politics, this is the true government - the government of the majority by the few and no one on this board, or any other, is a member of the 'few'.

I wonder if the cost-cutters know about this...

"The National Zoo said Wednesday that China has granted an extension of its lease of Washington's two giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, while details of a new agreement are worked out. Zoo Director Dennis W. Kelly was in China last week to negotiate a new panda arrangement to replace the 10-year, $10 million lease that expired Dec. 6.

China owns and leases all giant pandas in U.S. zoos..."

It is a modest rent. Take care when you visit Washington zoo. There is a family of five living in one of the pandas... but I will not say which one.

Oh, alright then, its the black and white one.

I don't see a "claw-back" system working, even if it were put on the table. The elderly tend to vote en bloc, and they have historically resisted any cuts in pension benefits, as in Social Security. It's doubtful you can count on this happening. Social Security cuts are known as the "third rail" of US politics for a reason.

Unfortunately, the "small government" advocates are going to defund the health care initiative we've got - the one that hasn't even started yet, because they think it's "socialism". You can forget universal health care.

After examining the posts from conservatives on this board, do you honestly think they are willing to accept any tax increase at all? I'm also uncertain who would be deemed "wealthy", but usually anyone who is denies it strenuously, in my experience.

Yes, we have the technology to feed, clothe, house, educate and provide medical care to all our citizens. If we didn't do these things during propserous times, what makes you think we'll do them in lean times?

What do you say?

I was watching 60 Minutes the other evening and a lady was saying more than a few States will default on salaries. One pharmacist is owed over $200,000 from Medicaid.

If people slip into poverty there will be social unrest. If one looks at countries where there is a lack of a social safety net they'll see the result. For example, countries that have western style vacation places. Tourists are warned not to go outside the areas. Is that the type of country people want?

My take on it is in the past most people didn't realize how the wealthy lived and further in the past the wealthy didn't live all that much different anyway. For example, before air travel and refrigeration few in the northern hemisphere had fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, what we consider luxuries today were not invented.

The internet and TV has shown us the inside of homes, told us of the activities and material possessions of others, etc. It’s a different dynamic at play today. The poor and disadvantaged can witness the extravagance and waste.

Do you think the Tea Party movement is based on an element of envy?

My point was if everyone has to cut back there comes a point where the very poor can not cut any more. It is not about punishing people who receive pensions.

Other countries have implemented such plans regarding government pensions. Rather than raise the tax rates on the "wealthy" some governments have used a claw-back system.

I agree the defense budget can and should be cut but if government pensions are in jeopardy we have to ensure the needy receive theirs first and in full.

You still dont get it, do ya idjit?

WE hardly export. Our trade deficit is something like 5 to 1. We would increase our output merely serving our own needs, and being self-reliant.

From my perspective globalization is the suicide machine.

We'll see if the Tea Partiers are able to cut defense.

I think people don't want to support government programs because there weren't any programs for them in the past.

It's the same old story of how people always believe they worked harder than anyone else, sacrificed the most....bla, bla, bla.

From what I can see the Tea Party movement is made up of "comfortable" middle class. Because they "made it" they believe anyone could and the reason those who didn't "make it" is due to their laziness.

I don't see it as envy. I see it as they feel they worked for and deserve what they have and don't want to share with those less fortunate.

I was reading there are job opportunities in China for westerners who speak Chinese/Mandarin. Companies are seeking middle management employees. How are you at learning languages? (I'm terrible at it, BTW.) Have you considered a move/looked into opportunities, AssHat?

Have you considered being a non globalist traitor to the american people?

Why do you love sending jobs overseas so much? What is the big gain in globalization, besides empowering the fortune 500 to control all of human affairs?
