Arlen Specter Dead at 82

it's all relative mott
That's true. To an extremist a moderate position would, to them, appear extreme. The point being is because one has a practical and pragmatic view about politics and governance does not mean that one does not hold principled positions.

treating moderation as some higher form of truth, where reality lies somewhere in the middle, is a fallacy. Somethings are more right than others.

Would you compromise and take a moderate position on womens rights?

Show me where it's regarded as a "higher form of truth" by someone on this forum.

Moderates aren't ideologs and believe in good governance for 'the people' 'by the people' as elected officials. They're willing to work with people rather than stand toe to toe with unelected people like Norquist.

That Norquist tax pledge is one of the dopiest repub ideas ever, and they've had some doozies.

Truth can lie in many places. Seeking truth is not what makes you a moderate. Being objective and seeking practical solutions to problems and working together with people in a spirit of compromise to solve those problems is what makes one a moderate.

now you are just speaking without saying anything. being a moderate doesn't make you an automatic seeker of objective truth.

Back when people wanted to free the slaves, they would have been considered radical. Same thing with proposing that women should be allowed to vote. Many things that we now consider "moderate" or "obvious" stances on isssues were birthed in revolution and radicalism (for the time period)

and moderates would have been standing right in the thick of things, with their hands up, trying to "reason" with both sides.

I liked Arlen... Rush hated him for being "moderate" but honestly, who else was on Bush about warrantless wiretapping other than Ds? Our rights aren't a partisan issue.

I hated him. He should have died 30 years sooner.

The Obamacare thing was really criminal of him.

Believing that I am Moderate because I take a different position than most people in one of the major parties on some issues doesn't change that I have a position on those things. I am not afraid of telling republicans that I don't give one rip if gays get married, even if it makes them think I am some horrible "moderate" it doesn't mean I am afraid to take a position, in fact it is the opposite of that.

If they aren't harming somebody then let them be...

I certainly didn't like everything about him, but saying he didn't have a position because he took a position other than the party's is a bit ridiculous, don't you think?

I liked his position on warrantless wiretapping, one of the few who still held that position when Obama got elected. Unlike most Ds who now support it, or simply don't care about it, now that Obama was elected.

Not to get topical, but "warrantless wiretapping" was legalized by Congress in 2008 on a bipartisan basis (27 Democrats and 1 Independent voted against it in the Senate -- Obama voted for it). Specter voted for it.

Hmm... Apparently he said it was a "good compromise" that they would submit the 'tapping for review... I may have to change my position. Maybe I didn't like Specter.
