Arlen Spector to change to dem party

lol what a shocker. Truth be told he's been a dem all along. I hate that guy,

He's been a "stick my finger in the air and see which way the wind blows" politician for years. His switch is so he can keep his job. Make no mistake, that he'll vote the majority opinion no matter party.

His only chance was to switch parties or run as an independent. Pat Tooney (who is 99% certain to lose the general in a landslide) was polling way better amongst Republicans.

Can he win the Democratic primary? I think so. I'd rather someone more liberal beat him though, because whoever wins is going to be their next senator.

"Unlike (Vermont) Senator Jeffords’ switch which changed party control, I will not be an automatic 60th vote for cloture. For example, my position on Employees Free Choice (Card Check) will not change."

Gah.

Be fucking honest Specter. You only started to oppose that because of the primary. There was no seriousness in that at all. Just admit it and we'll all be happy, then go and vote and make America a better nation.

60th vote for most things though. No filibuster on much of anything now. Judges are going to get a smooth ride. Time for Stevens to retire now.

I was just saying on here the other day that I liked the guy, for a Republican.

"I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate," he said in the statement.

This says it all.

PA is a closed primary state and a lot of people switched to Democratic to vote in the Democratic presidential primary leaving the PA Republican Party fairly hardcore "conservative" types. Given the change in demographics among the Republican primary electorate and the close call back in 2002 when challenged by Toomey, he didn't stand a chance.

What bothers me most about this is that the PA Democratic machine will accept him with open arms so instead of having a real legitimate liberal Democrat pitted against the insane Toomey we get more mushy middle Specter.

Hopefully a real Democrat stands up to the challenge.

No shit. But any real Democrat running without the backing of the state party apparatus and the DSCC has an uphill battle.

I just hope Specter votes with the Democrats when it matters. In the past he has only voted with Democrats when it doesn't matter much.

Id love it if PA would elect someone more liberal than Spector, but If not, I am glad Spector has been shown the light by his electorate!

Oh no the Democrat party might actually get another rare moderate voting senator.
Along with Bill Nelson and Byrd that would bring you up to a total of 3 !

I rarely come on here now as this country is sliding into the shitter with massive growth in government and no real end in sight and today I actually expected the liberals on here to be rejoicing at the prospect of a filibuster-proof majority and total absolute control far beyond what Repubs ever came close to but typical lefties just want to complain and find something negative.

I'd trade having 59 Democrats the rest of this Congress for having at least 60 real Democrats come November 2010 in an instant. It's nice if we don't have to deal with Republican obstructionism anymore but at what cost. Until I see Specter actually voting for cloture on, for example, the Employee Free Choice Act, I'll withhold judgment as to how beneficial this may be.
