Well, this is kinda like the climate science issue.

Personally, I wouldn’t rely on the opinion of pilots, or rightwing bloggers as to the spatial extent of the cloud, and the risk involved.

I would rely on atmospheric scientists to assess the extent of the cloud; I doubt that ash dispersion can predictably be assumed to stay uniformly at certain altitudes. And I would rely on vulcanologists or other experts to assess the risk of volcanic ash to engines. It ain’t exactly benign particulate matter; volcanic ash is made of silicate particles – it’s pretty much like a cloud of finely granulated glass, and presumably the risk of engine damage and death is too high to rely on the atmospheric science expertise of commercial pilots, and arm chair pundits..

Ash from a volcano isn't like ash from your campfire. It is full of debris, thick caustic dirt and chemicals. Flying through that and having it sucked into your engines and driven through those important bits of plane that keep you moving and thus in the air isn't smart. Cars will likely start having issues if people aren't constantly changing the air filters, and many people will be shocked at the damage to their paint. While the pilots could see the part they aren't realizing is that their planes would start falling out of the sky.
