Let these folks explain it to you:


Basically it says that when testing a claim (like guilt or lack thereof) the jury starts with the null hypothesis of "not guilty" then they gather evidence to test against that hypothesis. If sufficient evidence is presented the jury will FAIL TO REJECT THE NULL and find the person guilty. Or vice versa.

Either way it is an acknowledgement that it is an imperfect system which is amenable to more information should it arise.

That's why you aren't found "innocent" in a trial, but rather "not guilty"
