Automatic voter registration?

FUCK THE POLICE

911 EVERY DAY
Why aren't voters automatically registered to vote when they turn 18? Or at least automatically registered when they get their drivers license? What's the point of even bothering voters with voter registration forms? Is there some major reason I'm overlooking? This just seems common sense.

:dunno:

Why did I have to fill out a selective service form? Wouldn't they just know that I am a male that turned 18?

The reason is, so it will piss you off.

It is, apparently, a common feature of democracies worldwide.

The Problem. Recent elections underscore the importance of improving the way we register citizens to vote. Our voter rolls are not complete enough, with nearly a third of eligible Californians -- about 6.7 million people -- not registered, a lower percentage than in 2001.This lack of civic participation is a threat to good governance and a healthy democracy. Current state law limits valuable opportunities for engaging more Californians in the electoral process.

California, like the rest of the United States, is one of the few democracies where the government does not take responsibility for registering its voters. The international norm is an orderly process of government-mandated automatic voter registration of every citizen who reaches voting age. Ironically, Iraq has a higher share of its adult citizens registered to vote than the United States because the Iraqi government and the American authorities sponsored automatic voter registration of Iraqi citizens. It's time to establish automatic, universal voter registration that ensures every Californian’s ability to vote.

Automatic Voter Registration. The way forward is to establish universal voter registration as a mutual responsibility of citizens and their government that is conducted through an automatic registration process. Registration would occur on a steady rolling basis instead of in spurts tied to any specific election. Each voter receives a unique identifier that ensures she or he does not vote more than once. Not only does such an orderly process provide nearly 100 percent voter registration, but it leads to much cleaner voter rolls and less voter fraud.

maybe we could have a default "automatic vote" too.....you know, unless you go in and change it your ballot would automatically be cast in favor of the incumbent.....or were you planning on implementing that step later.....

Why pay and do paperwork for people to register to vote if they have no desire to vote? If they are too lazy to bother with something so simple, then whose fault is that really but their own?

I seriously doubt there would be much more expense involved with automatic voter registration than there is with the shitty status quo systems. In fact, it would probably be easier where the baseline rule is that every citizen over the age of 18 is presumed to be registered.

Because for all their blather about this being a "center-right" nation, the GOP, the Teabag Party, and even some corporate Dems don't want high voter participation rates from the disenfranchised and the minority demographic pools.

If we had 80% to 90% voter participation rates like most liberal social democracies have, this country would look a lot more like Norway, and less like Alabama, in terms of national policy and social welfare.

And you know what? I ain't buying the teabagger argument that people are too stupid or too lazy to vote. We ain't lazier than Sweden or Germany, countries with relatively high voter participation rates. A lot of people don't vote because it's a freaking hassle. And they usually have to work on voting days. Who the fuck thought up Tuesday as a voting day?

As for "stupidity".... there were plenty of people with nothing more than a high school degree and who worked at a car wash that knew invading Iraq was a bone-headed cluster fuck move - while in contrast, plenty of Ivory Tower PhD rightwing "intellectuals" were telling us how awesome invading iraq would be.

Then we should institute a poll tax of a million dollars. Really, if you can't even come up with a million dollars, then whose fault is that really but their own? They're just too lazy.

think of it like the werewolf game......I couldn't vote to lynch you unless I signed up to play......those people who were put on the list without signing up and didn't vote made the game difficult to play.....
