Average Tax Refunds Down 8.4 Percent As Angry Taxpayers Vent On Twitter

Many workers who had always gotten a refund find out they now owe the IRS.

Average tax refunds were down last week 8.4 percent for the first week of the tax season over the same time last year, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Dipping refunds are inflaming a growing army of taxpayers stunned by the consequences of the Trump administration’s tax law — and the effects of the partial government shutdown.

The average refund check paid out so far has been $1,865, down from $2,035 at the same point in 2018, according to IRS data. Low-income taxpayers often file early to pocket the money as soon as possible. Many taxpayers count on the refunds to make important payments, or spend the money on things like home repairs, a vacation or a car.

The IRS had estimated it would issue about 2.3 percent fewer refunds this year as a result of the changes in the federal tax law, according to Bloomberg. MSNBC reports that 30 million Americans will owe the IRS money this year — 3 million more than before Trump’s tax law.

“There are going to be a lot of unhappy people over the next month,” Edward Karl of the American Institute of CPAs told Politico. “Taxpayers want a large refund.” Some 71 percent of taxpayers received refunds last year worth about $3,000 on average, according to Karl.

Watching toothless hillbilly Trump voters complaining about Trump raising their taxes is a thing of beauty.

9% down is nothing compared to the ones that are going to get hit with a tax bill!

If you got a smaller tax return, it means you had more of your money that you earned throughout the entire year. If youy knew economics, you'd understand that the net present value is in your favor the smaller your return is. But you don't really get all that math stuff, do you?

liberals are citing the dumbest taxpayers as reason the tax code sucks. LOL Might as well cite the dumbest students to say the education system sucks.

The IRS is pushing talking points? Really? I didn't know they were that IMAGINATIVE! Nevertheless, had the time.

No. The IRS I presenting facts. They aren’t lying.

The talking point is idiots like you trying to claim that increased or decreased refunds is a true measure of tax liability

Only a liar or a financial illiterate would make such a foolish claim. I can’t rule out both for you, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and let you choose one

Idiot?

Or

Liar?

No he is not, the only thing he is implying is that a whole lot of American taxpayers to include Trump lemmings are going to be surprised this April when that tax refund they are used either isn't coming, it is drastically reduced, or they might even own tax

Regardless of the realities, it ain't going to help Republicans in 2020 attempt to see the Trump Tax Cut as an accomplishment of his Administration

One would have had to be a complete idiot to not see immediately that the Republican tax plan was a disaster from the very beginning.

Even the corporate oligarchs, the only people benefiting from it in the short term, will be totally screwed when the working class has no money to purchase their goods and services.

The exceptionally stupid working class people who voted for Trump and supported his policies either enjoy being butt-fucked by the oligarchs or are too stupid to have had any business ever going near a voting booth. I think "both" is the likely answer.

Chalk up another one who thinks tax cuts = tax refunds

It only makes sense doesn’t it?

Less money taken throughout the year = less of a refund

Either math is really hard for you guys or your TDS is so off the hook you can’t think straight

Of course it makes sense, but probability is that the average working American who doesn't have the time to stay on top of things never understood that the withholding tax was eliminated along with personal exemptions, the earlier bump they saw in their paychecks they thought was the tax cut. Now the reality will sink in

I am saying the first that is just made worst by the second. Good call.

That is not what he nor the thread is claiming, although I totally agree with him that tax cut was a disaster we will be paying for for decades

As I just noted, the probability is that the average working American didn't pay enough attention to what was going down to understand at the time that withholding and personal exemptions were eliminated. Last year they thought the bump they saw in their paycheck was the tax cut, and now many of them realize that they might not get the refund they are used to, but might actually owe tax.

Just adds to the difficulties for the GOP to sell Trump's tax cuts as an accomplishment

The discussion isn't over the tax cut, it's about the refund. If the GOP gets less credit from voters because of ignorance over how taxes work then so be it.

Sure it is, the political effect of the tax cut, which I do believe the thread has established isn't going to help Trump nor the GOP in the upcoming elections

And of course the American public does't fully understand tax, few do, that is why it has been a political standard for the right for decades, just like crime, demogogue tax in nearly every political discussion

I'd argue many people see with their own two eyes the waste that occurs within our government and the services they provide us and thus question how much more of our money the government needs. To speak to that viewpoint isn't using demogaugery it's just talking about the real world.

And as far as tax refunds what really needs to be stated is what state are these folks complaining from? We know with high tax states like Cali, NY, NJ etc. the limiting of SALT deductions hits them more.
