BAC - "Slaves to religion"

"Doy" is more old school. Let's bring that one back. fixed it for ya this time.:)
Wow must be real old school, or regional. In my day/ region when something was really obvious and someone didn't figure it out, the proper term was "duh". When something was interesting it was "pissah", and if it was really cool and interesting it was "wicked pissah".

Yeah. That was all true too. Maybe it was very localized to my locality. He had "duh", of course as you mention, plus "no duh" and, additionally, our local mutations. "doy" and "no doy".

We were innovators.

Indiana.

Great town that Gary Indiana. I saw it on the History Channel's "Life after People"; the unions threw it away.

Very good post and explanation.

I wonder if there is also more of a sexuality to some black cultures that are either offended or threatened by homosexuality. I mean no disrespect but there seems to be a big divide between the open sexuality of some and the primness of the church going black women.

There was a time when we were in fact threatened by homosexual acts. Missing from my the his-story of American slavery are the acts of debauchery forced on men, women, and children. Imagine a time when you could do anything you wanted to do to another human being.

But also, homosexuality is not an accepted practice throughout Africa or the arab world. There are long-held cultural taboos that just won't go away, generally because there is rarely an outlet for counter expression. I'm not sure those taboos are rooted in sexual fears as much as being rooted in religious programming.

I now live in Atlanta, the "Black San Francisco." You'll find more open black homosexuality here than in any other city in America. At the same time, Atlanta has always had a strong connection to black religious history. But there is little contention or connection between the two. The gay community here is essentially ignored by the church. Sure the musical director is gay, but we just won't talk about it. Sure many of us have a gay person in our families, but we just won't talk about it.

I've also met Jackson on a couple of occasions. He does have an aura about him that makes you want to hear what he has to say, but some of the stuff he says is so hypocritical I expected him to simply blow-up into a ball of flames. He and Cynthia McKinney never seemed comfortable around each other even though they often came together of different issues. The issue of the rights of homosexuals was not one of those issues they came together on. Cynthia has always been a champion of gay rights and she didn't care who was listening or who didn't like it. She would speak that truth to God.

Consequentially, unknown to the naked eye, the black church in Atlanta, led by mega-pimp-preacher Eddie Long, did not support Cynthia during any of her elections .. and in fact, Long worked hard against her. Did I mention that Long voted for George Bush .. twice? Did I mention that Long was a recipient of lots of George Bush's "faith-based" money? Did I mention that Long is one of the afore-mentioned Bentley owners .. and his own private jet .. and a Jaguar .. a 3 million dollar home .. and a Hummer that if you saw it driving down the road you would probably believe it belonged to a rapper like Ludacris.

Did I mention that Long is gay?

On the "down-low" as we like to call it, but it doesn't take much to see through Long's cover.

When Johnny Cochran died, I had to deliver a speech about him for the Congresswoman at Long's Church spread, which I call the Ponderosa. Before the services began, Long took up a collection from his sheep. When you enter the church you are given a big white envelope .. which you're supposed to place your offerings in. When the sheep are called to bring forth their offerings, they form a long procession that leads to the huge stage where they are to place the big white envelopes. When they're done there is so many big envelopes on the stage that a guy came out and actually swept them up with a big ass broom. I was astounded.

Iceberg Slim, noted black pimp and author, never had it that good .. or easy.

I don't want to give the impression that all balck churches operate in this manner or that they are all anti-gay. But far too many are in my opinion.

Sometimes my head just spins around and around.

Beam me up Flip Wilson.

But, bad news bac, eco wacko earth mother gaiaism is also a religion, and has genocide at it's core. so. We still have to talk about that.

Irrespective of the cute labels, anyone who doesn't believe humans should take care of the planet we live on is insane and completely lacking in spirituality.

It's not a religion, it's a responsibility and a duty to generations who follow us.

That's answers that. Thanks for your honest and thorough answer. I agree on all accounts that I can empathize with given my background as a white male. I met Jessie Jackson on one occasion. He tickled my belly as I was taking photos of the guy for the newspaper I was working for at the time. That's as close to the black church as I've ever been, so I can say I learned something in this thread.
He was reaching for your balls but you're too short and they are too small.

Scotty, beam me up .. please.

I admire the faith being shown but despise those who manipulate and abuse it. I had the opportunity to go to several black churches when my daughter was involved in a made-for-tv movie about Rosa Parks. The minister may be a pimp but they rock the house with the hymns.

I have always maintained that faith and spirituality are great. Organized religion is just another method of control and way to steal.

In the early 70's, I saw a movie aboiut a "child preacher" and his family. The boy had grown up and he made a movie about how much money his family had made, as "revivelists" and promoting him as a preacher.
I think it was called "MARGO".

Made me want to buy a big tent and take in on the road, so to speak.

Make no mistake about it my brother .. they DO rock the house. I've not seen any American Idol winner who could touch many of the singers in my wife's church. The voices are incredible. Add to that the dress of the congregation. Sharp as a tack and the women are beautiful .. even the old ones. If one is looking for a woman in Atlanta, skip the clubs, go to church.

Mix that up with the rythmic cadence of the preacher's voice and you've got a sold-out concert .. that plays on emotion.

Its a great racket. You can take in lots of money (and lots of it is cash so its easier to hide). If you buy cars and houses you put them in the church's name so there are no taxes. Anyone who questions you is sent by satan to stop you from doing god's work.

What a great scam.

That is a fact! I remember watching one older lady who seemed to have trouble walking but she could dance when the music started.

They can't do American Idol because those women's voices would blow the mics out.

I see you've been to black church. :)

But don't let the hyperbole color your thoughts about the congregation. Most of them are really good people who have unfortunately been conditioned by false beliefs and environment.

My problem is less with the congregation than it is with the pimp/preachers.

NO ONE IN THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER HAD THE "RIGHT" TO MARRY, MUCH LESS, MARRY THE SAME SEX! IT IS NOT DENYING ANYONE A RIGHT, BECAUSE IT HAS NEVER BEEN A RIGHT! HOMOSEXUALS MAINTAIN THE EXACT SAME OPPORTUNITY TO MARRY A PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AS ANYONE ELSE IN AMERICA, AND NO ONE ELSE IN AMERICA IS BEING GIVEN WHAT IS BEING DEMANDED WITH GAY MARRIAGE!

Sounds like the same argument used when they wanted to keep interracial marriage illegal.

"HOMOSEXUALS MAINTAIN THE EXACT SAME OPPORTUNITY TO MARRY A PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AS ANYONE ELSE IN AMERICA"

- How can you say that?

I may have to add this to your wall of shame in my signature!

Yes I have. One of them was the AME church here in Tuscaloosa. And when you say they dress, they really dress.

But I understand the congregation is made up of good people. That was my point about admiring the faith but despising those who abuse and manipulate that faith.

The people who really make up the church are the ones I admire. They are the ones doing it right. If the pastor is soaking them or manipulating them he should be slapped.

The saddest part is that there are some good people preaching and leading churches. They are concerned about ministering to their flock and reaching out to those who need it. But they won't have the new cars and money to retire.

How about going in halves, on that tent??

LOL

Blacks had the same rights to marry a person of the same race as any other American. Why did we have to change that?
