Believing Lies

you guys can talk about taxes all you want. this thread is about Faux news lies. No one will defend Faux's credibility or Hannity and as usual you change the subject or try to start a schoolyard name calling contest or ask a lot of silly nonsensical questions. Typical.

In a week Hannity watchers won't remember the lie but will believe... "... [Taxes] are scheduled to go up substantially next year, for everybody," the president said.

Cut back to Hannity.

"I know the anointed one will make sure that happens," he quipped disapprovingly.

The truth is...
"Under the tax plan passed by the last administration, taxes are scheduled to go up substantially next year, for everybody," he explained, in an unedited version of the remarks. "By the way, this was by design."

We'll just let this Faux lie slip into the memory hole like all the rest over the years. The reinforcement has been applied and the conditioning continues on Faux.

I guess I'll repeat what I wrote earlier what would you have liked it to say? Do you disagree that it is in Congress and the Presidents hand as to whether the tax cuts will be allowed to expire or to be renewed?

You said watch the video but you didn't say what the lie is.

What he is trying to manipulate into a "lie" is the fact that Hannity didn't play the part of the video where Obama said the tax cuts were set to expire "by design." Because Hannity left that part out, supposedly it was a "lie" on his part, as he lead people to believe the tax cuts expiring was Obama's idea, and not by design. (As if we really have people who are that stupidly disconnected, not to know that!) It's a real stretch to turn this into a "lie" but that's what he is arguing here. Funny thing is, Obama didn't mention it was "by design" because that was the only way to get it passed with a Congress full of idiot Democrats, who had to be dragged kicking and screaming.

Any bill that has a time limit can be said to expire by design. It doesn't many that not renewing the bill was what most politicians at the time entended. Bush may have hoped that the tax cuts would be renewed.

Au contraire! The trickle down did work and it worked for most of the decade. Up until the first year of the Obama administration our Nations Unemployment rate was continuously under 5%.

7.7% when Obama entered office. Obama hasn't been in office that long. obviously he isn't just going to step into office and the economy is naturally going to prop itself right up.

What do you call a recession that started in 2007? The Obama recession. Conservatives are fucking idiots.

The need for bailouts wasn't due to the Tax Policies, it was due to Reckless behavior by the our Elected Officials, Banks and Wall St.

It was due to conservatism.

The most important factor in getting us out of recession and moving into a steady but sure recovery is expanding private sector Jobs.

Let me just wave my magic wand, Klaat.

The key to this is allowing the Private sector to work and getting the hell out of the way.

Hey, it worked when Hoover tried it, didn't it?

Again, anything that passes through reconciliation has a sunset provision. Bush couldn't get 60 votes to pass it in the standard way.

The bottom line.. an expiration of this Tax policy in any way shape or form is a Tax increase and now is not the time for a Tax increase ...especially on those who's money and investments are the driving force of Job Creation. Why is this so difficult to understand?

The economy didn't notice the entrance of the tax cut, and it won't notice it's leaving either.

Saying Tax cutts haven't helped the economy is like saying the Stimulus Bill hasn't saved or created any jobs. Both created jobs just not enough.

The lie was the implication by Hannity that taxes are going up on everybody because of Obama. Deny it or dance around it I don't care.

It doesn't matter that the taxes were about to change or what is real, Faux knew this was a half-truth meant to reinforce the negative image they project about Democrats. It wasn't supposed to be noticed for content. It was supposed to fly by and reinforce their conditioned watchers. I didn't see the rest of Hannity's show, but I bet they followed this negative piece about Obama with a few minutes of feel-good pro corporate propaganda about how well some Republicon is doing and clips of upbeat knucklehead followers - or dogs and kids.

Watch the video then tell me Hannity wasn't twisting the facts.
No lie there at all....

Not any more than letting the phase, "Under the tax plan passed by the last administration", stand ...without explanation, that it was the Democrats that DEMANDED the tax cuts expire in 2011 was the only way they would let the cuts pass congress in the first place....

The truth is, the taxes will go up because of Democrats....those serving under the last administration and those serving under this administration.

Well they will go up if Obama chooses to let them expire. That's not deny or dancing around anything, that is fact. People/voters know Obama was not President in 2001. He did not write the 2001 tax law. But people/voters know he is the President today when they are scheduled to expire thus it is up to him and Congress as to extend them or not. Hannity basically said he thinks Obama will allow them to expire and thus taxes to raise. Again, tell me how that is lying or a half-truth.

I should have said this in the last response but my guess is you want to taxes to go up, at least on the high income earners. That is what Hannity was predicting Obama would do. Again where is the lie or half-truth in that?

By your logic every president is responsible for every single law that remains in effect while he is in office. I mean, Obama could push for legislation changing the War Powers Act so by not doing anything and allowing the law to remain in effect, Obama is responsible for the War Powers Act in the same way that Obama is responsible for the Bush tax cuts expiring.

You can make that argument if you like, but I don't find it terribly compelling.

I don't get that argument. There is a difference between not doing anything and nothing changes vs. not doing anything and having something change.

I am definitely not an expert on the War Powers Act but I don't believe it expires in 2011 unless Congress and the President act on it. If Congress and Obama do nothing about it it will stay on the books like it has for every Congress and President before the current ones. Almost all existing rules on the books would fit into this category.

The tax cut is different because it is scheduled to expire. It would be different if these tax cuts had been made permanent and thus nothing would happen if Congress and Obama left them alone. But because they are scheduled to expire inaction in this case will cause tax rates to rise. Thus the difference in your two examples.

In both cases existing law remains existing law.
