Best song ever... nominations

FUCK THE POLICE

911 EVERY DAY
OK, I want to do a poll tipey thingy for what this place thinks is the best song ever.

The first thing I'm going to do is take nominations from you guys.

The the next "round" I will pit all of the nominations against each other.

In the third round I will pit the top 4 vote grossers in head-on-head elections with another song in the top 4 the order will be picked randomly

In the fourth round I will take the two songs that won those head-on-head elections against each other... the song that wins this is the "best song ever".

Complicated, but who cares? It's go convenient multi-stage layering that makes things ever so excitin'.

So, give me your nominations now.

My nomination - "Hallejulah", by Leonard Cohen (although most people are probably more famialar with the version by Jeff Buckley, John Cale, or Rufus Wainright).

(you may post as many nominations as you want, I've just decided to only do one)

And, Damo, is there anyway you could lift the cap on the maximum amount of poll options we can place? Because I think there will be more than 10 nominations.

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Vince Gurauldi's "Peanuts"

"Lenny" - Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Desafinado" - Stan Getz

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" - Poison

You realise you're playing with fire here, Water. Have the memories of nominations and votes "elsewhere" faded so soon? Is history destined to repeat itself once again?

But, if you want to cock-a-snook to Madam Fate, then you are to be commended on your adventurism.

Whenever these votes are held in Britain it is decreed by the Queen that the awful "Bohmian Rhapsody" wins, just because the band is named after her. This must not happen again.

David Bowie - 'Starman'

The Smiths - 'How Soon Is Now'

The Specials - 'Ghost Town'

New Order - 'Blue Monday'

I'll second Watermark's nomination as I love that tune.

A few others, just for kicks:

Love Minus Zero: no Limit -- Bob Dylan
Like a Rolling Stone -- see above
Honky Tonk Woman -- the Stones

And then my only serious nomination, Droogies:

Ode to Joy (9th Symphony, 4th movement) -- ol' Ludwig van

From any genre?

Year of the Cat -- Al Stewart

Sound of Silence-- Simon and Garfunkel

Nowhere Man - The Beatles

Season of the Witch -- Donovan

Just my Imagination -- Temptations

This is too tough ..... breaking it down into genres would be much easier ...

Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb
Metallica- Master Of Puppets
The Beatles- Yesterday
Metallica- Fade To Black
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit
Guns'n'Roses- Sweet Child O' Mine
Don McLean- American Pie
Simon & Garfunkel- Mrs. Robinson
U2- I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Louis Armstrong- What A Wonderful World

Imagine how many threads I'd need to make using my three round process in order to do that many genre's. I'd probably need like thirty.

True .. but take a look at the selections so far... everybody has something different.. how are you going to decide which songs move on to the next round?

All of them do. The next round will be a weeding out phase. I'll do an approval poll of all the songs, and the 4 most approved songs will move on. I could do the 8 most approved songs, however, since this list is getting so darn long. It'll take longer. Then all the other songs will be eliminated in head to head contests... which will yield something important to voting theory called a "condorcet winner", who would beat every any other candidate in a race if paired head-to-head with another candidate, but more importantly, I think it's just more interesting than doing a straight poll.

Tiana...

Are you serious?

Also, I've decided to change the weeding out phase...

Everyone will post a score of 0-10 for all the songs. Then I will personally add up all of the scores, and then apply a quota to them to make sure all of the songs aren't of the same genre, which should take me about 10 minutes with a calculator as long as too many ballots aren't submitted. I'll submit the winners and the way I arrived at them on the thread so that no one thinks I'm cheating them out.

The older method I was proposing had a rather large problem... it would most likely make all of the songs of the same genre that the largest group of people on this site happen to prefer, which would make the other rounds boring. I read up on this new method on Wikipedia, which ensures some sort of proportionality to it instead of simply sending off 8 very simialar songs to the next rounds.

Also, do you think I should pit songs against each other head-to-head based on whether or not they are of simialar genre, or simply randomly pit them against each other?
