Beware Of Elites Who Decry Elites

Hmmm. Do you have in mind politicians (who are themselves elite) who claim to be fighting for the little guy (the oppressed) against the rich and powerful (aka the elites)?

Hello cawacko,

I have in mind the elites who decry elites.

They are clearly seeking the votes of the poorly educated that they may take advantage of them.

Oligarchs who pander to the prejudice of ignorant working class people in order to inspire them to vote directly against their own interests aren't really elite.
Elitism is a good thing. It means being at or near the top of something positive.

Oligarchs are powerful and privileged, but unless they've acquired a level of accomplishment in anything of recognized value, they're not elite.
I WANT elites in charge, or in other words, people who are exceptionally good at what they know and do.

They often say things like: "I know how elites are because I am one of them, but I am secretly on your side and will fight for you instead of being loyal to my elite world."

People of limited education are tempted to fall for this line.

It merely reinforces the old adage that people should be judged by what they do, not what they say.

If an elite wants to fight for the little guy, it will be apparent in his or her actions.

That's what I'm thinking as well though you and I could define that same statement in two very different ways.

Hello cawacko,

That's what I'm thinking as well though you and I could define that same statement in two very different ways.

It's a slippery slope. It's virtually impossible for a common person to rise to the highest office. It usually requires wealth and connections unavailable to Joe the Plumber.

So we are probably going to be voting for a choice of elites.

But the ones who claim 'all elites are bad except me - I'm on your side?'

That is a warning about how full of baloney that candidate is.

Elites are like anybody else. There are good ones and bad ones. They are neither all bad nor all good.

Anybody who claims they are all bad is reinforcing a false stereotype. You know it's a lie at the outset.

People of limited education are not excused for ignoring their own best economic interests in exchange for being forgiven for their racism and other despicable attributes.
People of limited education who are not racist, not misogynist, not xenophobic, not anti-intellectual, and not willing anaesthetized to reality by religious superstition
do not chose the candidates recommended by Charles Koch.

Ignorance is no sin.
Addressing it with an unwillingness to learn is unforgivable.
That's why I have no patience for trumpanzee forgivers.

Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter came from relatively modest backgrounds.

I don't think people like Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton or Obama came from privilege and they all made it to the Presidency. Trump's father had money but most of the elites hated Trump.

All things being equal I'd rather come from privilege than not, and many at the highest levels of power do come from a more privileged background, but it doesn't mean you can't reach the highest levels of power in this country.

For my whole life I have been hearing about “the elites,” it seems everyone, left and right, have “elites” to scapegoat; the rich, the intellectuals, the managerial class, Hollywood, the military, military industrial complex, DC politicians, coastal States, them, those people, etc, etc, etc

No doubt we do live to some degree in some form of plutocracy, but the term “elites” is grossly overused, it is kinda like “deep state,” doesn’t have to be defined, so amoeba like one can employe it anywhere one wants, “the elites” did it

It sounds like you believe in order to be elite one has to be born into wealth?

Agreed. I think you're onto something. It is a nebulous term. Already in this discussion, I am seeing some differences in what people think 'elites' are.

Hello Cypress,

True, originally.

But by the time they each ran for president they were each well connected and well-off.

Naturally, a short order cook or roofer is not going to be able to run for president.

We need our presidents to be driven, ambitious people with vision who take initiative.

God bless the roofer, but if all one has aspired to in their life is to do roofing work, they simply do not have the drive or initiative to lead a nation.

If your goal is to have a 40 year old plumber wake up one morning and decide they want to be President it's probably not happening.
