Should we include the Indian scouts used by the US Army, like Custer had when his command was wiped out...? Maybe how East Coast and Great Lakes tribes were all-too-willing to involve themselves in "European" / colonial warfare taking sides and politically scheming from that for their own benefit? Or, maybe we could look at the tribes like the Apache or Seminoles who lived primarily by raiding and plundering...?

Oh, by the way, the Navajo weren't the only "code talkers" in WW 2. And WW 2 wasn't the only war code talkers served in.

The Choctaw and Cherokee served in WW 1 in the same capacity for example. In WW 2, the Navajo program was with the USMC in the Pacific. The US Army used various tribal members in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe to the same effect. The Germans however knew from WW 1 that the US might do this and had collected a very large library on native American languages and were able to a good degree figure out these 'codes.'

As for their utility, it really wasn't that significant. The US military by the time the Navajo / USMC program was in place was using almost entirely FM radios for tactical and operational communications. The Japanese had very few FM radios, and none that operated above high frequency like many of the US sets did (VHF and UHF sets for example). So, they couldn't even intercept the US communications for the most part and listen in at all...
