This guy really, really did save the world from a nuclear war. His single decision not to launch a nuclear torpedo and sink the US carrier USS Randolph during the Cuban Missile Crisis came within seconds of an actual start of a nuclear war.

At the time, SAC was on high alert, had their bombers in the air on the "Go line" to nuke Russia. US IRBM forces in Europe were ready to launch. The US military was beginning to mobilize. Had he gone along with the submarine B-59's captain and political officer, we would have had a nuclear war.
Nice current event.
To this day, nobody knows what the glitch was. Though I suspect "certain Russians" knew.
Probably just that quality Soviet Union manufacturing... The sort that ended up causing Chernobyl...
Gee, I sure am dumb. But at least I have good taste in art. And by art I mean anime tits.
Yes. A lot happened during the cold war. A lot of good things came out of it. No way you would see that happen today. Not enough diplomacy left in this world.
A similar event happened in 1983 when Stanislav Petrov narrowly prevented WW3.

First book of fiction by the Naval Institute Press.I liked that movie. Relatively close to the book.
I was in the Navy learning Antisubmarine Warfare.
