In terms of harshness of marijuana laws, Watermark lives in Mississippi, a metaphorical oasis in the South for its policy of decriminalization. Possession is virtually never punishable by jail time, in stark, bleak contrast with other states.
I have personally asked our current Attorney General, Troy King, if he considered mandatory minimum sentences (ranging from 3-5 years) for possession or sale of marijuana in certain areas to be an effective deterrent.
He responded that he did in fact, find them to be an effective deterrent and said he recommended incarceration over rehabilitation in drug cases.
