Bill Maher on Ayn Rand: ‘It’s all stuff that seems very deep when you’re 19 years old

Well, he's kind of right. Of course, he's like the majority of Rand bashers...they've never read any of her work.

But, he's right about the 19 year old. When you view her stories without the partisan political glasses that most adults wear, you see the value in her basic tenets, and her protagonists.

What's really "deep" about any particular political philosophy? At 19, I had already studied quite a few of them, and was not really familiar with Rand yet.

Oh, it's just another attempt to make people think that only children think freedom is good. Like a thread about gun owners being perverts with tiny pricks it aims at making people feel good for joining the right "team" rather than to edify. Cheap theater and parlor tricks. If you can convince your audience that they are patrician gods and are one of the elite you will maintain their loyalty and they'll stop looking for the gimmick.

Basically this is the same thing as a preacher talking about studies of gays and how they are promiscuous and dangerous. It works for a bit, then usually intelligent people see through it. There's nothing more "deep" about being a democrat, they just want you to believe that there is.

Remember, Bill Maher used to proclaim he was Libertarian, back in the day when being Democrat was a bit less likely to promote his work...

Well he didn't get much acceptance from the media elites when he was a libertarian and lets be honest his flirtations with libertarianism had more to do with his desire to smoke pot than it was anything else like many so called libertarians

When he got bounced off of ABC he started tilting leftward.

I think his best point was made at the beginning - that Libertarians are ruining libertarianism. Because they're not libertarians. Nothing close. Before it was attached to this magical utopia where the only thing keeping you from prosperity was a government willing to feed the poor, it was used for socialism - in Europe. It was used for the anti-authoritarian sect of the left. So, well, on a scale ranging from left anarchists to state socialists, it was used to describe the former. A.K.A., libertarian socialism. That's it's actual meaning, it's actual usage. The anti-capitalist belief in abolition of all non-self-justifying structures of power.

And even the free marketer folks who adopted it weren't nearly the extremists drooling over Atlas Shrugged. What most people don't know about Frierich Hayek is that he believed in a guaranteed minimum income, was not a conservative, and would likely have condemned TDEs - and perhaps even capitalism he was shown our modern economic situation.

Hes dead on

Libertarianism is a teenagers fantasy.

I Read Ayn Rand upon no ones request when I was in my middle teens.

She was an idiot.

I was 16 and had NO preconceptions about what her stuff was like or about.

It was lame and shittily written.

Her charactors were cardboard cut out from her limited mind.

The "grand ideas" in it made no sense.

I am sure Mein Kampf was more to your liking.

do you really see the world in such a black and white state?

jesus you people are limited in the brain area

all read on my own volition by a dirt poor kid who wanted to know what the people who claimed to be the smart people knew.

I discovered some "smart" people just try to fake being smart.
Ayn Rand was a top contender

And here is the audience I was speaking about. The people willing to accept any nonsense so long as it tells them they are "better".

You're talking about the concept. Desh is talking about the writer.

Most overrated writer in history. Desh is right - her characters are black & white, and her style is blatant & cumbersome. She's just not a good writer.

Meanwhile, Bill Maher has never seemed particularly deep.
