1960s Chick Magnet
Southie was never my part of the city, but my daughter lived there for a while when she first graduated from college.
There was this tavern owner named Tom English.
Every February for Black History Month, he decorated his tavern with stuffed monkeys.
His regulars were perfectly cool with it, but outsiders weren't.
Unfortunately, no laws were being broken and there was nothing to be done.
The late Mayor Menino, GRHS, decided to take things into his own hands, however.
He unilaterally directed the liquor commission to suspend Tom English's license to operate
for the month of February every year until further notice.
There was NO legal provision to do this,
but the local court refused to put the pub owner's suit against the city on the court docket.
This IS Boston, after all.
Eventually English quietly settled out of court for one four month license suspension and stopped with the monkeys.
He used the excuse that he was renovating the place for a new opening.
In a sense, it was too bad.
That local landmark was the perfect place for volsrock and TDAK to visit if they came to town.
I'm pretty sure that CFM could have gotten a job there.
