People who know history are aware of Dixiecrats who were Dems in name only. They were terrible bigots and fought to hold minorities down. They were Repubs in every single vote too. They were not Dems, but they believed they still had to run as one due to the southern reaction to Repubs. They hated that east coast over-educated northerners.
When LBJ passed the Voters Rights Act and other legislation that helped minorities, he knew the southern Dems were heading to the reds. He said for the next generation. He was way short in that prediction.
Byrd was a terrible bigot when he was young. However, he seemed to have seen the light. He was a strict constitutionalist and lectured the Repubs on what was actually legal on the Senate floor.He became the conscience of the Senate.
