Britain should act to bring BP's battering by US authorities to a close

It was not the physical issue of the rig that caused the spill. It was the shortcuts by BP which did that.
The project was many months behind schedule, and many millions over budget. Cutting corners in order to get the rig up and running was BP's only concern. Otherwise, the concrete work would've been done properly.

It's obvious from this thread that the Brits are being offered nothing but BP's propaganda. Them oil eatin bacteria are a miracle!!!!!

Halliburton did the concrete work and they are liable along with Transocean, I believe that they will be forced to pay huge compensation when the case comes to trial. Cameron has already paid $250 million to BP over the failed blowout preventer. In common with many of your country men and women you prefer to revert to a simple minded xenophobic analysis rather than actually look at the facts.

I really do not care who your new best friend is, you have a track record of picking lunatics anyway, so that fits the pattern. You have a habit of indulging in hyperbole and to say that the oil was ever likely to reach Cape Cod is just fucking bullshit.
Of course it was likely to hit the Cape if it hadn't been capped fool.

I am not far from the Gulf and I am pretty vociferous about the long term damage done. You think bacteria ate between 17 and 36 million gallons of crude oil? Let me clue you in to where the oil is. The toxic chemicals put out to handle this makes the oil sink. Its still there. There are places where it is STILL washing ashore and causing problems.

The areas effected are some of the most fertile in the region, and home to countless plant & animal life forms that were devastated.

BP's profits fell significantly this year. But they still posted a profit of $5.9 billion in the first quarter. Which means the entire $20billion is less than one year of profit for BP.

In fact, http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/feb/07/bp-announces-25bn-annual-profit lists the profit for 2011 at $25.7 billion.

Actually the dispersants don't make the oil sink, what they do is emulsify the oil into tiny droplets which are then acted on by the warm waters, wave action and bacteria. That is simple chemistry and no different how the surfactants in washing powder work. Do I need to explain about hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules?

If you are going to bang on about BP why are you not talking about Transocean's and Halliburton's profits? Halliburton did a shit job of cementing the well and then conveniently lost some of the paperwork and Transocean ran the rig, only six of the personnel on board the Deepwater Horizon were BP employees yet apparently the number one operator of rigs around the world hires people who are totally incapable of running a rig in the Gulf without BP to watch over them.

We have no idea what the long term consequences of the unprecedented use of these dispersants will be.

Of course we know, they biodegrade like all surfactants and detergents do, they are mostly short chain hydrocarbons with a hydrophilic sulphonate ending.

you can't prove it would have hit the cod :pke:

What makes me so angry is that I've never ever said that BP was blameless and it pisses me off the way that the fines just carry on and on, with one agency after another putting the boot in. It has got to the stage of being totally vindictive in nature.

rune doesn't know squat

there were no projections saying the spill's path would end up in cape cod.

What pray tell would the US be vindictive about?

What happens to fish eggs and shrimp and crab larvae and oyster seed when soaked in detergent wonder-boy?
