Dude, the "Protect America Act," which authorized this shit, passed in 2007 at the behest of the Bush Administration. (Obama and 20+ other Dems voted against). Bush's NSA then started the program. Pretending Bush had nothing to do with it is laughable.

The bill passed in 2007 did not allow collecting the phone records of a group of 100+ reporters on trumped up bullshit
The bill passed in 2007 did not allow collecting the phone records of EVERY citizen in the country on a whim.
The bill passed in 2007 did not allow collecting the phone records of one reporter by LYING to a judge to get the authority....
