Bye Bye NFL

Athletes can show off their skill in flag football. You think Americans are going to watch that?

The NFL will draw athletes below the caliber of what is seen in the WWE if they don't figure out a solution. Who is going to watch it then.

It's simple economics. If you want talented employees you have to make them attractive offers. What kid is going to choose football and dementia over baseball, basketbal or some other sport and old timers games? How many of their parents are going to let them choose the former?

Funny how of all the things I posted that I think are contributing to the downfall of the game, people only gravitate to concussions.

The NFL is going to have a serious problem if the courts start awarding money to ex-players and ex-players families (like Junior Seau's) who sue for brain damage suffered through football. It's not a subject the NFL is going to be able to push to the side.

Why do u think I am saying bye bye. It was a good run. Just another card dealt in the chickification of America

Just my opinion but I don't see it as chickification for the NFL to say we need to deal with head injuries a number of our players are receiving while playing the game.

I'm getting tired of bullshit "defenseless receiver" calls. I'm hopeful that some safety will cover a WR on the sideline (having already been called for hitting the guy too hard), and sarcastically pick the receiver up and gently set him down out of bounds. How will the refs respond to that? :D

There's no question there's been some b.s. calls on defensive backs going to dislodge the ball from the receiver as if the defense is suppose to allow the receiver to catch the ball with no interence.

The new rules certainly hamper good defenses. And I am a huge fan of defensive football. But there has to be a way to play the game without turning their brains into mush.

A lot of these calls are getting called on the sidelines, where there is typically way less damage done to the receivers than the stuff in the middle of the field. I suppose they could specifically prohibit multiple defenders from crossing over receivers in the middle of the field, sandwiching them with powerful blows. Don't know how to make the sideline hits any safer, though...

Did I say that was the only thing. I listed many, but apparently the good folks of JPP have ADD and can only focus on one. Or maybe they didn't read the whole post.

I am talking about the whole breast cancer awareness month bullshit. And it is just that. That is the chickification of the game

Goodell is destroying the game. I would also add having games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday are helping to destroy the game.

No, they won't. But there are ways of changing equipment requirements,
Therein lies the enigma. Players' first protection was a leather helmet. They gradually changed the design, until we have what is now used as a weapon. The better equipment makes for harder hits when leading with the head. In fact, young players are trained to hit with the head. Running backs lower their head upon contact. These habits have to change somewhat.

The league has also realized that carpet covered concrete was a stupid idea, so they're finding ways to soften the artificial turf.

making better medical judgements, and making minor changes to the rules to prevent 150 players from having head trauma.

Yes they are well paid. But the average career length is 3 years.
Given the data on concussions that is now available, combined with the possible liability to the league, we won't see head injuries ignored as we have in the past. The 'football mentality' is slowly changing, as we now see what happens to athletes after they retire. Playing til you drop just isn't feasible anymore. Especially since many pioneers of the game are crippled, and broke.

They watch arena football already.

The league has made changes to rules that are geared to a more exciting, higher scoring event. They moved the goalposts to the back of the endzone. They changed the rule about placement of the ball on missed field goals. The moved the kickoff placement back 10 yards.

All geared toward a faster, higher scoring affair...which is what the fans want.

Negating the WWE mentalilty isn't going to turn the NFL into flag football. It's going to breed a new generation of faster, better equipped athletes, who rely on skill and intelligence, instead of brute strength at the finesse positions.

There's still plenty of intellectually deficient play in the trenches for those who feel the WWE is the model for every sport.

The league has to define the parameters better, and the refs have to make sure they see what is happening on the field. There are definitely growing pains right now, but I'm sure the refs watch video of the games, and see the mistakes that were made.

I believe it will just take another season or so before the players are trained to stop hitting a certain way. It doesn't happen overnight, as they've been trained to play that way since childhood.

What we'll eventually see is hard hits, but they won't be aimed so high. Likewise, running backs are going to have to stop lowering their heads on contact if they don't want helmet/helmet hits.

Actually, I asked you to clarify what you meant by calling the concussion problem "bullshit".

And what freakin difference does breast cancer awareness month make in the actual game?? It helps raise money to save lives. That is a problem?

Look at what they have done with the bad calls because everyone is worried about a concussion. Sure if you lead with your helmet, that should be a penalty. But, I have played and watched football my entire life and some of these calls are egregious. A defensive player launches to tackle and the offensive player ducks down; defensive player flagged. I watched defensive players lead with their shoulders and in the process the helmet slid up; penalty. That is the bullshit that is ruining the game.

As for breast cancer awareness month, it is football, none of the football players have titties. How about prostate awareness month? And really is there really anyone who isn't aware of breast cancer? Stop polluting the game with pink shoes and all of the other chickified shit they are doing.

It is a violent game, it became popular because it is a violent game. That doesn't mean people want to see someone get hurt. But, people love the hits.

My point is that the game is changing, and in my view it isn't for the better. This is the first time in years that I didn't watch every NFL game I could and I have talked to many who feel the same way.

The officiating is changing and will have to find a balance. They are trying to make changes to save people from sustaining life threatening or permanent injuries. It takes time to balance that.

Look, I'm sorry if pink offends you. But, believe it or not, there are plenty of female football fans. Also, breast cancer will kill an estimated 39,000 women this year, while prostate cancer will kill fewer than 7,000 men. I would say a disease with 5x the mortality rate should have a greater awareness. Its not "chickification".

Yes, people do lovethe hits. As I said, I am a huge fan of defensive football. But there can still be hard hits without the head injuries.

It was great knowing you when I had the chance

This year was the first volley in tearing down what was once a great American past time. From coercing the teams to wear pink cleats in October to all of this bullshit about concussions, the game will eventually wither away. It won't be tomorrow, it may not be next year. But, in the next 10 years it will be finished.

This was by far the worst NFL season I have watched for many reasons. Goodell is tearing down the sport. I knew when Obama's buddy Demaurice Smith took over the union that it was a bad sign, and I was right

RIP NFL
What a load of crap. The NFL has become a charicature of violence. When will it stop? Probably not until someone is killed on the field. No sports league is as ripe with PED use than the NFL (who could damn well teach European cyclist a thing or two about using performance enhancing drugs.) or with violence. No professional sport, not even MMA and Boxing, have the large number of athletes ending their careers with permanent physical disabilities and brain injuries as the NFL does. The NFL needs to change protective equipment to lessen the degree of violence and it must implement out of competition drug testing and not only should the athletes be punished for using PED's but the coaches and franchises should be punised too. This will make management accountable for PED use too and will make them proactive in policing their use.

The current drug testing in the NFL is a joke. It should be expanded to off season, with out that only the leagues morons get busted for PED use. But punishments should be expanded too. If a player on a team gets busted for PED use the coach and the team should be fined. If it happens a second time in the season the head coach should be suspended for four games with out pay and he and the franchise fined. If it happens a third time in a season the coach should be terminated, the team fined and the franchise banned from the post season. This shit of 300 lb lineman running 4.5 40's has made a travesty of the game. Getting a grip on PED use with definately reduce injury rates too.

Then they need to change protective equipment from the hard composites which athletes can use to devastating affect to soft composites. Helmets should be changed from hard polymer composites to polystyreme helmets like cyclist use. This would provide adequate head protection against brain injury while precluding using your head as a battering ram. This would force the game to be more technique based instead of being based on power hits. Guys would have to learn how to takle better instead of learning how to run trough walls.

Like I said, who isn't really aware of breast cancer? Seriously? Lots of other avenues for creating awareness. I don't believe the football field is one of them. I get it you have been chickified. You aren't alone. Lots of guys on this forum have been. Don't get butthurt over it.

They aren't making changes to prevent injuries, they are trying to protect themselves from lawsuits. If you know how a concussion happens, the helmet won't make a difference. How does a helmet keep your brain from bouncing around inside your skull? It doesn't. Now the helmets have given a false impression of invincibility. And I don't like seeing guys lead with their helmets and I have bemoaned poor tackling for years. LEad with the shoulder, wrap up the legs. That is how you tackle.

On a side note, I heard a running back once say, he would rather get cracked in the head than at the knees because the knee injury could end his career on the spot.

Look, I am not expecting you to agree with me. I am just stating my opinion
