California Screaming

Loyal to the end
...California is like a patient on life support. At the start of summer the state government was so deeply in debt that it began to issue IOUs instead of wages. Its unemployment rate has soared to more than 12%, the highest figure in 70 years. Desperate to pay off a crippling budget deficit, California is slashing spending in education and healthcare, laying off vast numbers of workers and forcing others to take unpaid leave. In a state made up of sprawling suburbs the collapse of the housing bubble has impoverished millions and kicked tens of thousands of families out of their homes....Professor Kevin Starr, who has written an acclaimed history of the state, recently declared: "California is on the verge of becoming the first failed state in America."

Outside the Forum in Inglewood, near downtown Los Angeles, California has already failed. The scene is reminiscent of the fallout from Hurricane Katrina, as crowds of impoverished citizens stand or lie aimlessly on the hot tarmac of the centre's car park. It is 10am, and most have already been here for hours. They have come for free healthcare: a travelling medical and dental clinic has set up shop in the Forum (which usually hosts rock concerts) and thousands of the poor, the uninsured and the down-on-their-luck have driven for miles to be here.

...California is currently cutting healthcare, slashing the "Healthy Families" programme that helped an estimated one million of its poorest children. Los Angeles now has a poverty rate of 20%. Other cities across the state, such as Fresno and Modesto, have jobless rates that rival Detroit's. In order to pass its state budget, California's government has had to agree to a deal that cuts billions of dollars from education and sacks 60,000 state employees. Some teachers have launched a hunger strike in protest. California's education system has become so poor so quickly that it is now effectively failing its future workforce. The percentage of 19-year-olds at college in the state dropped from 43% to 30% between 1996 and 2004, one of the highest falls ever recorded for any developed world economy. California's schools are ranked 47th out of 50 in the nation. Its government-issued bonds have been ranked just above "junk".

... California... is losing people. Between 2004 and 2008, half a million residents upped sticks and headed elsewhere. By 2010, California could lose a congressman because its population will have fallen so much...

Such is the failure of fiscal and social liberalism.

Thanks to conservatives.

Streamline the system. Eliminate referendums and supermajority requirements. Ban the Republican party. These are the steps that are necessary for prosperity.

by streamline the system, do you mean widen the highways that people use to move to Nevada and Utah?.......

I'm just glad that you liberals keep dissing The South like you do. Keep those crazy "open minded" Californians ignorant to our Blessings, so they don't move here. :)

The problem can be fixed flat if they'd ban the Republican party, all successor parties, and would put a lifetime ban on running for office for people that are or have ever registered as Republicans, as well as their children (which is useful for routing out counterrevolutionary independents), and removed voting and speech rights from anyone who'd ever voted for any Republican and their children.

Spoken like a child who doesn't know shit from shineola. When you reach drinking age, you can then make the real world shattering decisions down at the local watering hole with your buds.

Of course you'll be paying $30 for a beer and $25 for the Chex Mix at the bar, but heck. Your liberal leaders will be telling you "It's all good. We gotcher back".

You'll have all your shiny idealism and rosy cheeks too!

Since we've had a Democratic legislature, this state has gone to hell. I've never been very thrilled with Arnuuuuld either.
Funny, I remember! You couldn't get enough of his stuff, what happened, he couldn't terminate your woes?

You use to claim it was the last governor and now it is the Democratic controlled legislature!

Honey, you guys need to tax more, sorry, but that is life! You play, you pay!

Yeah, but it still doesn't cover your spending, now does it! If you want to play, you have to pay! They should be lower with the housing market going to hell!

This table doesn't tell the whole story, and in fact is misleading.

Per capita, California is 10th and NY is 11th. But this is only the State taxes. Since I lived in NY, I can tell you that the local property taxes are outrageous\: 3 to 4 times what I pay in NC.

NH is 48th, but their property taxes are extremely high. That's why so many folks live in trailers up there.

California has the highest taxes in the nation, honeybuns.

California is in the upper-middle when it comes to taxes per a person. It does have one of the highest marginal income tax rates, true, but you shouldn't quote the two statistics as if they are equal.

It's also notable that there's little correlation between state tax rate and unemployment nationwide.
